Hello need help, just rebuilt my engine new oversized pistons, mains, bigends and all gaskets, checked turbos all ok,running the car in now but has started smoking again just like before (the reason i stripped it down) it has new pcv valves. Not sure if all monifold pipes are back on properly as it was a while between stripping and rebuilding my Z but runs ok tickover is normal and stable. And if no one can help, does anyone want to buy a zx only smokes on tickover lol.

ahh forgot to say only smoking from the driver bank of pistons my car has twin separate exhaust system and no egr removed and sealed during rebuild.

how long is it after you rebuilt it matey as there might still be excess oil in the exhaust system from where it went prior or have you overfilled the oil level?

what colour smoke is it?

got car back on road christmas day smoke started yesterday well noticable anyway done 300 miles so far running it in oil level has dropped to halfway between level marks, smoke is oil smoke am a mechanic have seen lots of times lol

id guess at the turbo

hi stevemochan, is your pipework as in boost control and vacume pipes to the small valves standard as this is what i need to look at first just to make sure theres nothing wrong there, and please dont say the T word, they looked and felt allright when i stripped the engine and manifolds down, think i will have to strip exhaust off and elbow to have another look, how much for your turbos?

fitted all new stem seals, and no oil on valves when i stripped them down pistons were knackered so thought that was the problem had low compression on 2 and 6 rings were knackered so fitted new set pistons and all seemed well for 7 days then back to how it was before

If my car was here you would be more than welcome to compare the pipe work but unfortunatly its with Andy Duff having forged internals amongst other things fitted.

As for the turbos i dont know. They where OK when i took them off my car its just that i upgraded to GT28R,s

Have you decatted?

Steve.

yeah went to hib exhausts on anglesey for full system thinking would release power only to find hollow cats.

MM i had my first system from him(Shaun) allthough i changed it last year for a custom job as i needed the 5 stud downpipes.

So the tubs i have have still got the split down pipes on and where not smoking when i took them off.

Check the elbows first to see if theres any oil residue and if it is the tubs give us a ring on 07775684169

bought oversized pistons and had the block machined to fit the old pistons had picked up and scored the bores so i went oversized and had the bores cross hatched so thats all ok, just been going throu my service manual disc, how complicated did nissan need to make this engine lol

i dunno what the zx's are like for head warping but did you have them skimmed before you replaced them ?

  • Author

am going to print out the manual in work and just check everything found some line diagrams of the pipes, and will pull the exhaust off tomorrow night, cheers steve have your number will let you know.

turbomad1, had block and heads checked when they were boaring out the block was well in tolerance am starting to belive its that one turbo thats at fault, but still the zx is more fun than trouble lol

Thats what happened to mine.

I fooked about with my Blitz DSBC and nearly blew the heads off LOL

When Andy came to take them off he thought the center bolts felt loose, and a skim confirmed it.

So this time im taking no chances and have gone for Cometic metal head gaskets(thanks smithy) and ARP head and mains studs.

Steve

the engine isnt that complicated really.a lot of jap motors are over engineered.once you wade passed the emission rubbish and the silly graded bearings and pistons all you have is a v6 with two tubs feeding it.most of the nissan knee jerk rebuild info can be ignored once youve done a few.i was petrified when i rebuilt my first.ask funki si on here.his motor is a gem.phew!! thank god. :)

have you not seen how the intake cam timing system works oil pressure and spinny disc sensors lol, i know the core engine is basic but all the extras they added to make it more advanced than everyone elses well really i ask ya lol

yes to be fair it was quite advanced at the time but shopping hatch backs come with that now.nissans let down was that they were in un chartered waters when they designed it.the vtc set up was dropped in the end but it was done very quietly.and the cars lost grunt at the same time.

il keep that in mind when building mine then matey

Jimmer. I had the same problem as you. I rebuilt my engine with new wiseco pistons and egal rods.. etc.. i had the turbos recond at a verry well known recon place, and within about 15mins of my car running it started smoking on the driverside! So i pulled the engine out and it looked like it was the turbo! So i sent it off again and it came back with a clean bill of health. To be on the safe side i had a second oppinion and the results were the same. Also checked all the valve stems, anywhere that oil could be burned and all was fine.

I rebuilt the engine AGAIN and it started smoking almost instantly, after getting through about 10lts of oil i decided changing my turbos for GT28RS's and its never smoked since.. it was a faulty turbo that no one of the turbo manufactures could find (including garrett).

So my advice would be to buy Brand New and not second hand turbos!

So my money would be %100 on your drivers turbo buddy ;)

Thats my 2p worth.

The tubs i,ve replaced on mine have no shaft play at all but still smoked alot on tickover , even worse after de-catting .

What threw me a bit was that i kept on checking the inside of the stainless intake pipes thinking it should be coated in oil if the seals had gone but there were as clean as a whistle which got me worried thinking it was the engine , we now know it was the seals on the exhaust side of the turbo.s leaking staight into the exhausts and burning in there causing the smoke , they,re as sooty as fook :smash:

A pair of re-con tubs and it,s sorted now
