Can you believe this, I got a quote from the local Nissan dealership for an oil and filter change. Took it down today to be done, just looked at the invoice properly, and realised that they have changed the oil (Motul 300v Chrono 5w 40), and NOT changed the filter!!!! I thought I would just give them another go (they damaged my bumper last oil change, although it had already been damaged before I got car, so I left that). Have you EVER heard of anyone changing oil in a car like this, and NOT the filter, I just can't believe it!?! They charged me a little less than quoted, and I wondered why when I collected the car, just thought nothing of it, because I would not have thought that they could be SO stupid as to do something like this, they didn't even mention it?

They also informed me that my rear main oil seal is leaking, and my steering rack has a slight leak!! I have never lost any oil or steering fluid before, there has never been any sign of leakage anywhere. So will have to check that out tomorrow!

I have a feeling the Nissan service schedule says the filter only needs changing every other oil change. I'd still do it every time though.

how much did they charge you ?

£26.81, I supplied the oil. Not a bad price for a main dealer though I suppose. I just would have thought they would change filter with oil whatever.

why not do it yourself lol, oil change is a piece of piss.

Just couldn't be bothered to be honest!!

If I get them to fit filter today, will my new oil still be ok?

  • Author
No, they will have to drain that, the 'may' put it back in

I mean, is the new oil now contaminated (0.5 litre of old oil still in filter)? Wh

Do I need another lot of new oil, or will this oil still be ok with a change of filter (I have only driven car about 20 miles max)? I didn't realise till later that they hadn't done filter as well.

Just spoken to the service manager there on phone, and he is saying that I "TOLD HIM NOT TO CHANGE FILTER" only oil!! What a lying twat, as if I would say that and then phone the next day complaining that it hadn't been changed (I ALWAYS have my filter changed with the oil whatever anyway, and would NEVER say that)! What I actually said was, I will supply the oil, and you supply the filter, as has been done twice before by them! He actually quoted me £110.57 (that is for front pad change as well), then they charged me £94.94! I asked him to explain why he had quoted me a higher price if he hadn't quoted me for a filter as well, and after stuttering and blubbering, he said that he had got the job timing for an oil change a bit wrong!! These people are not only useless, they are F*****g liars as well.

its sad having to learn the lesson the hard way, but Nissan dealers know literally, and i mean LITERALLY, bugger all about the 300zx. there are plenty of garages/experts on here that will do a 1st class job for half the price. when I first got my Z, they were gonna charge me £800 for a replacement steering wheel. yes, thats EIGHT HUNDRED POUNDS    youve never seen me drive out of a garage so fast.

Complain to Nissan UK head office. They will kick their arse. No point in complaining to the useless dealer.

My God! £800 for a steering wheel, thats going some, even for those idiots!!

It's pretty unbelievable that there own "dealers" know NOTHING of what was once their top of the range vehicle!?! It's not as if the car was never sold in this country either, it beggars belief, it really does. The car only finished production completely in 2000 I believe!

tell them you want the oil AND filter changing again for free and you want it done at a different dealers, if theres one within a reasonable distance. Failing that tell them you will get it done elsewhere and send them the bill. Have a few beers, get online and start complaining via email, i do it all the time, great fun.

The new oil will be fine (otherwise the filter is no use ;) ). Why would an oil filter contaminate oil when its actually there to remove contamination? :D  ;)

What I meant was, because they left the old filter in and filled the car with new oil, would the half litre of old oil still left in the old filter contaminate the new oil when the engine was run. I am going to get a new oil filter fitted today, but would I need to change the oil again also, because of this?

LOL no it won't be an issue - there's also the old oil left in the oil cooler and also the remnants left in the engine when they do the change, so the extra little bit that was in the filter won't make any difference.....

Cheers, I think I worry too much!!

Exactly what Duff-Man says. He knows his stuff......

Most Nissan main dealers would have stopped working with the 300zx around 10 years ago. Therefore as most of their grease monkeys are only 12 years old they would never even have seen a 300zx :D

There are still the odd good one left though - Dan Perkins in Slough still has a 300zx mechanic in the workshop; they've always been pretty well recommended. I still don't let them service the car though as I don't see the point in paying their labour charges for a 14 year old car.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

complain anyway.. its the future.

Nah, too right, I don't see the point in paying their labour charges for any age car, except if the warranty says you must! I only use them now and again for little jobs like oil changes. Who in their right mind wants to pay £108.00 an hour labour!!??!!

very true, i once had the tubs changed at a main stealers & they had no idea what they were doing, they fitted the tubs but the gaskets were leaking, the stockboost gauge was disconected, they put in the wrong battrey from another car, & when i picked the car up itn was screaming from a boost leak :headvswal

get this i was told to put more sound proofing in the car :xxx: :xxx:

needles to say i never went anywhere near a main dealer again, specialist is the only place i will go thumbs up for phil at c&s wood :D they have always looked after my zed.

as for oil changes & service i have always done it myself its a piece of cake & you get to learn a lot about your zed

I certainly won't be going anywhere near one again. Specialists only from now on. Fitted filter now anyway, and all is well!

Just got to see what this new oil shapes up like, changed from M1 0w 40 to Motul 300v Chrono 5w 40 to see what it's like. Not that I had any problems with the M1, cos I certainly didn't, it's just that I don't think it's as good as it used to be, and I think the Motul might be the business from all I've read and researched about it.
