Hi,

While I've got the headlamps out I thought I'd look at at annoying problem I've had since putting in some H.I.D lamps. One bulb only come on 50% of the time and it's deffo the bulb and not the ballast or holders. Can anything be done with the bulb or does it have to be replaced?? If so are they all the same fittings and where's the cheapest place to get a bulb??

Cheers

Cheers bud, sounds like I bought the same ones as you from the group buy a few years back http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=27185 I don't think I have that problem though as everthing's removed and on on my kitchen work surface :( It's deffo that bulb as I can swap everthing else over and it only does it with that bulb :( Just don't really want to spend more money on these P.I.A lights :(

Vijay have you got a pic of the bulb ,i,ve aquired quite a few Merc and Peugeot ones which mainly have a round fitting surface , if they are the same as yours i can pop one in the post for you :D

I bought this same kit from this group buy and funny enough I keep getting one that won't startup only after switching on and off will it startup they are supposed to be hella small ballasts from german cars , if you have a spare bulb I'll buy it from you so I can try it

cheers richard

I have had lots of problems with my 'ebay hid kit from oz'. I have isolated the problem to one ballast pack. The other is ok. Both ballast packs have a rubber surround.. that i now know isolates it from other electrics. I have brand new halfords 700A battery fitted as well. I have a jap import zed. Dunno if that is an issue as they dont use H3 regular bulbs.

It really pisses me off when i put the headlamps on and one wont fire up.

Ere could i get my mits on another ballast pack from somewhere to work with my HID bulb. Do all HID bulbs get the same voltage and AC (i assume HID bulbs are AC cos of the ballast pack thing)

Just been messing with this again and it only seams to have a problem when the bulb is hot :(

Boldy, did you have any luck??

And does anyone know if we have projector lamps or not?

Why are people still messing around with non-H3 fitment HID kits/bulbs? I really don't understand it. There are kits out there which are a direct replacement for the standard H3/H3C bulbs (as in the new HID bulb has a H3 base) which means you'll not have to "butcher" anything to fit them.

The kits I sell can be bought with every conceivable bulb fitment (H1, H3, H4, H7, H11, HB4, HB5, HB6, etc, etc) and this saves you endless troubles when trying to fit the kit and at any point in the future if you wish to revert back to the original kit. (Yes, I know that my kits are more expensive than the average flea-bay/Taiwan/Japan/China kit but they are also a cut above the rest in terms of quality of both the bulbs and the ballasts - by a mile).

With regard to the bulb issue being discussed here I can see three possible causes:

(1) the incorrect bulb fitment is causing electrical problems,

(2) the bulbs and/or ballasts are of such inferior quality that they are not up to the job they are supposed to perform, or

(3) the ballasts are overheating due to the rubber shielding on the outside impeding heat dissipation.

Good quality ballasts are shielded on the inside of the casing at the point where any contact is made with the outside case (ie at the mounting screws). What that means is that heat can be easily transfered to the casing and dissipated to atmosphere to keep the electronics cool. If you then pack the ballast in rubber you are stopping the heat from being able to disspate and this "may" cause overheating (especially if the ballasts are mounted in the engine bay behind the headlights).

I think your best option is to purchase a "proper" HID kit - from a UK retailer. You will then have full warranty on the ballasts and bulbs plus a local point of contact if things do go wrong.

I'm not fishing for sales (as I've got plenty going on as it is) but in January 07 our HID kits (car specific) will be on sale. £235 (club r.r.p. = £250). Easy installation, no modifications required, completely reversible and guaranteed.

PS - Vijay - that HID bulb in your picture sure looks like it has seen better times ...

Hi Danny,

I think it's more of a case of trying to rescue the group buy from ages ago. I wish I never bought the original ones as I've only put them on my car 6 months or so ago and it's been a pain. My lights have already been butchered and if I had the spare money I'd buy new lamps and HIDS to fit.

Had the same problem.... there is a ceramic tube covering the wire that runs down the side of the bulb. I gave the wire a slight tug to see if it was connected OK and discovered the wire was broken low down. This was easily fixed by hooking the remaining ends together and twisting the wire a little..... Of course I replaced the ceramic insulation over the greater part of the wire before the simple jointing of wire was completed. The ceramic tube can be broken two suitable sizes to keep most of this wire covered. Its been working fine for the last three or four months. Hope your problem is as easy to fix.

Just checked, not the wire on the side :( but thanks anyway ;)

Boldy thanks for the offer but i have already gone for a HID ballast on ebay for £35 that has the right connectors i need. My original HID kit was specific to my jap import zed.

The HID ballast looked high quality, umm

boldy,i'll have the merc ballast and bulb for spares for my hid seen as its the same kit i bought in a group buy a few years ago

richard

this may sound silly but as i havnt got my hands on a zx yet what exactly does this do? and what difference does it make?

Basically you,ll be able to see in the dark as Z headlights are crap :headvswal

H.I.D stands for high intensity discharge , there,s no filliament in these bulbs ,it,s a small ball of gas which is ignited using a ballast box, they reckon they should out last the car

They give you a very bright blue-ish light and as Danny mentioned the kits he supplies are just a direct replacement for the standard z headlight bulb , so it,s an easy job to fit them , where as the bits i,ve got are only suitable to replace parts for an early kit from a few years ago which involved modifying the bulb mounting itself to take the round fitting of the bulb .HTH

Just to show how bright these are .
