With the cold weather and the problems some people are having I thought I would look for a driving course that perhaps club members could get involved in.

I live about 20 miles from the Millbrook proving ground, where vauxhall tested its cars, so decided to start there.

During my search I came up with this web site.

http://www.cadence.co.uk/home.html

At first glance it seems very expensive at 430 squid for a days road drivng and a go at the proving ground.

I then noticed that they do club days.

Perhaps we as a club could organise something along those lines to help us all out.

Hopefully this will minimise the accidents that seem to keep happening in this bad weather.

What do you guys and girls think?

Darrell

PS be carefull out there.

water on your bonfire Andy :D

....my old drinking mate Mitch passed his IAM @ two weeks after his 17th birthday and passed...he took his driving test on his 17th and was for a while the yougest ever IAM

maybe it harder if your older / more experienced as you have bad habits by then...cant say for sure just a theory

It should be quite easy to pass the IAM test if you've still got your head full of the 'normal' test stuff. Like you say, driving for years dulls your senses and makes you forget what is actually road legal and what isn't.

I'd tend to disagree with the statement above... Agreed, bad habits are hard to lose... but the 'normal' driver training covers nothing like the same level of observation skill, understanding the dynamics of your car etc etc. I think its just as hard for any driver, new or experienced, but perhaps the challenges are different.

As for insurance discounts - I have had 25-30% from Elephant and now the Zed is on a classic policy i get nearer to 50%

Dave

dont you have to retake it every 3 years? I think thats what put me off if i remember correctly

It seems that this is the course we should all do then.

£85 dosen't seem too bad.

I have emailed to see if they do a group buy.

Darrell

You don't have to retake IAM every three years. You can choose to have a refresher course when ever you like though.

ROSPA Advanced Driver Training (which is even more thorough than the IAM) requires a retake every 3 years.

Dave

Regarding the group buy; The IAM offer discounts for affiliation with motoring clubs and organisations. I am sure they will provide a discount in exchange for a link on this site, or a column in the magazine (if there is a magazine?!)

Phil.Scordellis@iam.org.uk is the guy to speak to - I organised a club affiliation deal with him.

Dave

and, without looking like i'm talking to myself....

Presumably, the rules have changed since that bloke passed his IAM test two weeks after his 17th, because to take the test now you must have held a UK/EU driving licence for minimum of three months.

Cheers Dave.

I will give him a try.

See what sort of deal we can do and then sort some bodies.

Darrell

I can honestly guarantee that anyone who does the course, whether they take the test or not, will never regret it! Only problem is that it makes you a REALLY bad back seat driver :D

Have had a reply from the ADI and they will offer a discount.

I need to sort some stuff with MAC1 first though so watch this space.

This is the web site

http://www.iam.org.uk/

It is a nationwide driving course so no problems with being local.

I am still working on a day at a track/airfield etc with some sort of instruction however.

The IAM have basically offered a discount to the club as long as we promote them on the web site.

It is in the hands of MAC1 at the moment but the guy I was deling with has just gone on holiday so won't be sorted till the end of the month.

Darrell

I've just noticed this thread, I was thinking about taking this in the next few months anyway, but would they still offer a discount as I'm 22? (According to their site that means I would normally pay £75 instead of £85)

I'm not certain about this deal - but a deal I organised in the past went on to give you a further £10 off for being under 25. Ie, 85 -> 75 for club discount, then 75 -> 65 for being under 25 aswell.
