whats this sound?

Had this noise for quite a while, its sounds like tappets, although it go's away when I take the clutch off, its a tiny tapping sound, can hear it in second at low speed also when reversing and going forward there is a little clicking sound in between changing gears, its coming somewhere for the front. Has anyone got any clues? I also checked the message board out about the amount of oil people are putting in their cars, recently my zx has been stagering just felt weird so I put a litre of semi-syn in the oil in and it started smoking under the car around about the loction of the turbos's, I was sh*t scared so I pulled over kept the car running eventually the smoke dissapered, sould I be concerned? did I put to much oil in? anyway the car feels beeter smoother, although the tappin sound is still their, any suggestions?

cheers rob b

With all due respect, putting oil in the car 'because it feels weird' will leave you with an empty wallet. You'll save money in the long run taking the car to an expert.

If the clutch makes the noise come and go then the problem is behind the flywheel so clutch / gearbox / prop / diff. If it sounds as though it's forward then likely to be clutch or gearbox. Can't really give any more of a clue - one persons tap is another persons tick is an another persons detonations etc etc etc.
