My Zed appears to be sick.

(mk1 Twin Turbo Auto import)

on idle she is running fine, no problems. on any rev at all (2k and more) she whines quite badly, I cannot find the noise around the engine, but is very distinctive in the cockpit.

the noise is coming from the back/center or back/nearside of the engine (or Transmission)

Its dark, so cant do much tonight, but does anyone have any ideas of what it may be before i attack her? any known whines with pumps, belts or auto trans ?

thanks in advance,

Zeegles.

sorry, forgot to mention this is in my 1st post...

ac is off, i dont use it as it needs a regass anyway,

ATF, engine oil and coolant are fine,

no loss in oil pressure, transmission/engine performance or boost.

but it sounds so bad it cant be ignored. any mnore ideas?? shall irecord a sound clip for you all, so you can hear it?

does an auto have any sort of gaitor or such that may have come loose?

It does have a gaitor but it still shouldn't be whining tbh

Without hearing it it's hard to diagnose. What sort of whine is it ? :wack:

cam covers can come loose....belt then rubs causing odd whining noises

possible, has always sounded a bit Cammy, would that be distinctive on the back of the engine bay though, you can hardly hear it from the front

Problem with the clutch on the compressor ? Could just remove the belt to be certain.

im out here with the car now (on the wireless laptop) and it deffo, deffo sounds like a belt - a lot more distinctive than last night, am still unable to source it... but is coming from right at the back of the engine.

if the fault was with the timing belt, would i notice any other symptoms ?

I cant get under the car for today, as i have lost my jack. but wondered what i can do now to rule out any issues / problems?

You will if it breaks. Best to check it asap

Just copied aome audio off my mobile that i recorded last night of the sound im describing. i was concerned even then, so the sound you are hearing is the car being reved up to 2.25k rpm only

the file is mini, like 50k - so will take a split second to download it and have a listen

i so which i could start work on her now, but i cant - GRRR! anyone, ideas after hearing that?

the more you listen to it, the more 'belty it sounds'

Check the gearbox cover plate at the bottom hasn't come lose and started rubbing on the flexplate. If you look at the bottom front of the gearbox it covers the part that the block doesn't if that makes any sense?

Cheers,

Andy

Agree, it does sound kinda like a belt, but like one rubbing rather than slipping.

guys, thank you all so much for your help - wish me luck - and I will report back once i know what the issue is

you all deserve a beer :)

I think it sounded like the main bearings in the gearbox, sounds a bit like mine.. Try to press the clutchpedal until it takes(just barely), if the sound disappears it might be the bearings.

If not it might be an idler pulley.

He'll have a job doing that - its an auto ;)

Could posibly be the torque convertor. Strange thing is its from the rear where there's no belts

I belive it might be a problem then... :smash:

But i still believe it is one or more of the bearings in your gearbox...

more than likely auto problem, iv seen a few faulty autoboxes which have strange whining/wurring in all gears, get the fluid drained and check for any discolouration, or metal particals
