He needs to put the plate on retention and then you need to transfer. Each of you require forms from the DVLA to complete. I owned my old car as well as my Z, so just did a simple transfer.

he's already got the plate on retention so do i need to request it to be transfered to my car? just need to know when to pay him as i dont really know the guy??

You then pay for the transfer through the DVLA. When I did mine, it was about £70 iirc.

do i wait till its in my name before handing over the money or do i pay up before hand?

sorry if that sounds thick but i dont feel right handing over a grand when i wont be getting anything as such :smash:

I think because you're transfering it to your vehicle, you have to pay. If not, that's something you need to arrange with this bloke you're buying the plate from. Best off paying via CC as you can claim back if anything goes wrong.

yeh i'm buying the plate of this guy for £1k so i dont want to get stung, not that i think he would do that but you never know!!

if the reg is on retension which costs £105 as your now going to purchase this reg the owner needs to add your details as a nominee on the V778/1 form then send it off to his local vro office then once you receive the other copy you can transfer the reg to your vehicle but you have to have valid tax/mot then take the tax disc to your local vro office & apply for the new V5C cert once you receive the new V5C only then the private reg belongs to you & it will cost you another £25 unless other guy is paying
