I am wanting to rid the Z of the tinny 'Fiat Uno door crash'. Just wondering if anyone's gone mad with sound deadening on their Zs and if it made any difference.

Not interested in the ICE reasons for it, just wanting a better quality clunk, rather than the typically tinny crash that Z doors make on closure.

Did filling the doors with dynamat make a really noticable difference?

actually.....standard zed doors close with a nice solid thump....over-time however it seems many lose the thump and gain a tinny clank from loose mountings, rattly window mounts and the need for hinge re-alignment.

Dyanmat or Brown Bread would certinatly help though, for a proper job you may want to remove the innerskin and window to cover the inside of the outer skin too.

I'm planning on removing all the components from the inner door one by one and padding them up/renewing bolts etc to try and rectifiy the situation but dynomat may be the solution. Hmm :)

It's the tinny noise from the door handle that gets me the most...

Yes same here, i've come from a history of 7 granada scorpios and they have a nice heavy, satisfying shut.

Nicely weighted and shut with a clunk not a rattle

I've had all my door cards off and everything is still very tight in the frame. My doors don't rattle, they are just tinny. I don't think the Z has any sound deadening on the inside of the skins at all do they?

I don't think so, i think it's the window makes most of the rattle as there's no top supporting frame. Usually that bolt through the window

No, mine doesn't rattle. It's the noise of the skin. Just needs some sound deadening on it to break up the sound.

I was thinking of finding some dense waterproof foam to line in the inside with and bolt onto. I've had the interior off the doors so many times i can't remember how easy it is to get inside the door cavity though

You mean neoprene?

Yeah that looks like neoprene. I used to sell the stuff into industry. Could get sticky sided stuff too.

Yeah the stuff i'm thinking of my dad used to bring back coated in sandpaper on one side from scotch/3m when he worked there, really tough stuff but flexible enough to be moulded round the inside of the door cavity.

He can probably get some cheap from his old friends there

You're in Leicester. Trying calling a company called S.B.A That's the company I used to work for. They had an office in the SW. But have since centralised everything from their base in Leicester.

Anyway, they should still sell the stuff in various thicknesses and sizes.

I'll give them a try, have quite a few little jobs i'm doing to improve my car before JAE next year and a few thousand to lob at it then we'll see if i get moved from the front of the JAE tent to make way for better cars ;)

I am planning on soundproofing all behind the panels and renewing all the seals to make it very quiet inside.

Going for a quality not quantity sound system so need it to be pretty well sound insulated.

Id go with a single skin of Fat mat style sound deadeningon the outer door skin and 2 layers on the inner skin .. i Dont recomend Dynamat or brown bread as they are notorious for peeling off .. this is speaking from experience, i must have fitted a few 1000 sq ft of this over the years my own Zed has 3 layers on the outer skin and 5 layers on the inner skin .. but thats literaly to help stop the panels flexing when i finally get the install finished

Sounds spot on that does. When I have the time, all the interior's coming out of mine for soundproofing and waxoiling. Will do that in the summer. Bad idea wax oiling in the winter as the fluid never 'creeps' very well when it's cold/cool.
