I am in the process of removing the engine from my TT auto. The engine has seized so I am unable to turn it over to remove the bolts from the torque converter so does anyone know if it's possible to pull the engine out with the torque converter still bolted to the flywheel?

Don,t see why not bud , the only problem might be clearance , we took mine out today and the engine can only move forward off the bell housing a certain amount before it has to be liftef to clear the cross member , with the T/C still on it might foul the bell housing .

I,m sure someone will know a definate answer :confused:

Unbolt the crossmember and lift the car up with the engine hoist so you can slide the engine and box out from underneath.

Yep no problem at all and clearance will not be a problem either the only problem you will have is if you want to put the engine on an engine stand as it will not be possible with the converter on

Chris its not as simple as that matey the easiest way by far is to remove the engine from the top it will make little or no difference if the TC is still attached to the rear of the engine when you pull it

Yes you're right but I was just suggesting other options - that's the way I removed the engine and box in one piece from a donor car when mine blew a few years ago.

Was very quick to do as well.

Thanks for the replies. It's really difficult trying to separate the engine from the box with the torque converter still attached. I supposed I just need to get the angles right but it's a tight un to pull apart :mad:

Make sure you've got all the g'box bolts out! Sounds stupid but there's always one more you've missed when doing it first time. Of course you'll have to drop the prop and disconnect the gear linkage etc to drop the box first but it aint that difficult :)

Can anyone tell me how to pull the torque convertor out of the gearbox because I have all the bellhousing bolts out and there is a slight gap all around but it just wont budge any further. Should it be so tight? :headvswal

It should just come out, sounds like you are getting stuck on something? are you catching the turbo on the steering linkage? I take it you have a jack under the gearbox? try jacking it a bit higher or lower. Maybe then it will budge.

I'm not sure yet why it's so tight but I just ended up pulling the engine and auto box out together so it will be much easier to get them apart now. Thanks for the replies.
