turbo's

can anyone tell me how long i should leave my engine running(idle) after a long run,say 300 miles ,and will i damage my turbo's if i just turn my engine off straight away????

Get a turbo timer, let that do the work lol.

I have found with my turbo timer that it tends to cool down for longer periods when i least expect it.

EXAMPLE - After long journeys on motor way i tend to drive slowely when im getting to my destination to let the blowers cool off ect. Then it usually goes on for about 1 minute.

After Kemble trackday, 15 minutes on track and it stayed on for about 5 minutes plus.

But then what do i knwo because i had a monster turbo failure :S

I agree with 300z, fitted a Blitz FATT last week and have found that after a five minuet drive to get some petrol it stayed on for around 40 seconds however after an 18 mile drive up the M11 to get to work it turns the engine off after about 20 seconds. Seems odd but the turbo timer knows best I guess. I think it’s all down to how you drive the car immediately before switching off ie pulling up at the pump and switching off straight away or taking a minuet or so to park the car in a car park.

Definatly worth fitting though as I never used to let the engine run on for as long as it does now.

I have a blitz FATT-S, does the job pretty well. I have heard that the HKS ones take more engine data (REVS) and hence are better as calculate more accurately. The Blitz ones only take speed, so you can thrash the nutas off it in 2nd and it'll barely go beyond the 10 sec minumum.

Good for practising you 0-60, 0-120, 1/4 etc though. smile.gif

Jezz.

I had always assumed that these things monitored the oil temp .....

I thort the Blitz FATT used engine rpm to set shut off time since in auto mode it has three settings:

Low - Calculate time after 1800 rpm

Medium - Calculate time after 1200 rpm

High - Calculate time after 900 rpm

Of course you have a total nightmare fitting it if you have a Alarm worth its salt !

I would like to get one but does anyone know if they will work with my Cobra Thatcham 1 alarm?

My car has a thatcham 1 alarm (can’t remember which type, was on car when I got it) and a Lazerline cat 2 immobiliser. The immobiliser doesn’t arm for a few minuets after removing the key so has not interfered with the turbo timer. The alarm will not arm until the turbo timer has turned the engine off so I can’t walk away and let the turbo timer do it’s stuff.

Mine doesn't. frown.gif Just has 1 wire that goes to the speed signal, also used this to calc the 0-60 and 1/4 miles times.

I have the FATT type S though, which has more features (speed times etc) than the FATT. It's the same as the MSTT.

Yeah it does doesn't work with my alarm, easy to wire in, just that there is no way around it, you have to wait for it to count down before you arm the alarm else it unlocks the doors when it switches off!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Mmm not too secure is it?

Toad Ai606 BTW.
