evening all.

 

ive got a 91 UK TT Manual, and im getting some grinding, almost gurgling noise in 2nd and 4th. im only getting it from about 1500 - 2200 rpm, and then it goes away.

it is fine at idle - no noise at all.

 

i have checked the VTC by disconnecting the soleniods, but that seems to make no difference.

 

if i have the car at about 1500rpm in 4th and put my foot to the floor the noise is quite loud, then stops at just over 2000rpm. also, it is comming from the passenger side.

 

anything anyone can suggest?

to give you a comparison, it sounds a bit like my freelander diesel engine!

Check behind the wheel arch liner at the back of the wheel, there is a unit fitted on both sides which can fracture, this then leaks exhaust gas out, the noise is often changed by the nature of the location or the extent of the fracture.

 

Replacement is the only answer, UK and Jap spec/ series l and series ll units are different so make sure you get the right one.

Check the gearstick rubber gaitor is fully seated ;) Remove the leather trim to be able to see this :)

That'll be the mother-in-law bud :)

 

Just take a pavement mallet, raise above head, bring down swiftly on top of offending noggin :smash: ......you should just be left with a very faint gurgling noise which will disappear within a few minutes. :)

is this anything to do with the AIV valves?

If it only does it in 2nd and 4th, then it's not going to be AIV valves.

 

Most likely your g/box fluid needs replacing. MT90 is the lube of choice and should cut down on the audibility.

thats the conclusion i can to (mainly because it was the cheapest gearbox related solution!)

Make sure you go for MT90.

NO!!! If it was the oil it would be doing it in all gears! Check the gaiter!!!

aye i agree with the gaiter, mine used to do this as you pull gear lever back it tugs on the rubber (behave yourselves!) exposing the gearbox noise,drove me nuts,don`t forget there`s an upper and a lower gaitor.Good luck :)
