As a compromise why don't all pubs supply free nicotene patches and inject carcinogenic chemicals into the arms of smokers and their children on the way in :o

Maybe they'd think twice about the reasons then?

Ban it!

"BAN KIDS FROM PUBS"

"BAN KIDS FROM PUBS"

By that reasoning you'd have to ban all non-smokers from pubs too?

Don't think they'd be in business for long LOL

alcohol cost the NHS more money per year than smoking related illnesses, but they wont ban that because the MPs all get their drink cheap in the house of commons where most of em spend most of the day pissed

I already said that

got nothing to do with passive its all about saving money on NHS from smoking related illnesses

Just to add that the smoking ban won't apply to the house of commons (duty free) bars anyway. How hypocritical is that! Politicians voted the ban in, for everyone except themselves!!!

Drink itself isn't passive though.

well it is when guys get totally pi55ed and want to start fights, annoy women and most other implications to violent behaviour

then again you can always flip the coin and say its not all drinkers and it gets loads of people merry and happy.

There's alot of you who support a ban and I respect your choice, but do you not believe in freedom of choice for everyone?

Because you personally dislike smoking, everyone who enjoys it should suffer a ban? It doesn't have to be all or nothing. This isn't about smoking for me, it's about freedom of choice. I believe we should have smoking and non smoking pubs and choose which ones we want to drink in. Simple and fair! Infact what could be fairer?

Is it fair to ram your preferences down the throats of others who disagree with your choice?

Would you all believe me if I said I didn't smoke?

It's not right for politicians to force landlords to impose a ban on a legal activity. It's the thin end of the wedge that will lead to unfair restrictions on all the things we enjoy.

but do you not believe in freedom of choice for everyone?

Yeah do you? How about the freedom of choice for wanting to go to a pub an not have to breath in other people's bad habbits and coming home stinking of a stale stench. The smokers have had their way for years and the non-smokers have just had to put up with it. As soon as the roles are reversed, everyone's quick to moan. ;)

I don't give a toss about the politics behind it and the reasons really. I am looking forward to the ban but that's for my own reasons.

Technically, it's still not passive as there is no injestion of substance, although I do agree with you to an extent.

But Si, you're misunderstanding!

If we have both smoking and non smoking pubs, both of us can make the choice as to which one we want to drink in.

You won't have to suffer any smoke at all, and I can breath all the smoke I want to.

I would only be affecting you if I was selfish enough to light up in a non smoking pub, for which I would be fined and ejected. How am I affecting your freedom of choice? Surely I'm not at all?

On the other hand, if we make all pubs non smoking, I don't get any choice.

How can that be necessary, right and fair?

I went into a non smoking pub on wednesday night , it used to be full, guess what ?it was empty.

also now you don't smell smoke, just poeples BO insted. the non smoke pub just smelt of bleach insted

I'm not misunderstanding anything. Personally, I'm happy there'll be a blanket ban in pubs and clubs....but that's because I can't stand the stench and it making me feel ill....I'm not arguing what's fair and what's not at that point.

If you go over to the states where smoking in enclosed public spaces has becoming banned, rather than in select areas, then you'll see there's no drop in trade, people just got used it.

Bleach has a much nicer smell than stale smoke.

PMSL whats wrong with the designated smoking/non smoking areas we've had in restaurants for years? Is there actually any hard evidence that passive smoking actually exists??? Smoking costs the NHS millions - it also provides millions due to the high taxes etc imposed!

I bet it would be interesting to see how many of you that agree to a ban are actually ex-smokers ;)

It's been banned for ages in Scotland now and if you go out there you'll find it's still as busy as ever and a lot of the pubs and clubs have installed covered areas and heaters so smokers aren't having to stand in the cold and wet to have a fag.

Took my girl out for a night in Glasgow and the first thing I noticed when I woke up was her hair still smelling nice instead of like an ashtray :)

The idea of passive smoking is just common sense - you're breathing in smoke which is never good for you in any form, makes you cough, feel ill and stink!

Passive alcohol consumption? that would be like getting a pint thrown at you on entering a pub. Suppose it does happen

Why don't you smokers go breath your exhaust gases, they're full of cancer causing stuff and will give you a high for a while before killing you

I gave up smoking cigarettes a long time ago after finding one of the chemicals in them makes me very ill.

Personally every time i go to a pub at the moment:

- I come back smelling of fags and have to have a shower before bed it's that rank

- The next day i'm wheezy and my throat's full of catarrh

- I get headaches

- And i've probably lost about 5 minutes of my life due to all the crap i've been inhalling all night

We went to a none smoking pub and didn't even notice, none of my mates smoke and i came back having enjoyed the evening more!

The pub wasn't empty and i don't think that making everyone else inhale your ciggy smoke is fair.

You wouldn't stand for it if your child was in a room and people were smoking everywhere and the child was inhalling all the smoke would you so why should everyone else?
