buying the wife a car for christmas as a suprise now she wants a 2 seater sporty convertible so ive been looking at cars and i know she loves the MGF's and the MX5's

so i need to decide which one??

i have around £4k to spend but she doesnt like the mk1 mx5's with the pop up head lights!! but i may stretch a little higher for a mk2 mx5 but if she's honest she prefers the MGF but i must think of reliability etc

so opinions please :d

Dont forget that Mazda is still in business. That has to account for something.

She paid 10k for it 5 years ago with only 8k on the clock,it has now done 100k and has NEVER once let her down apart from a puncture but that dont count LOL.

They are very good reliable cars go sort it Mike;)

Go for the mx5 mike, those mgf's are shite! I know a guy

who has one & he says they're shite too!

There was an mr2 convertible built, but it's rarer than

300 convertibles though!

Go for a MX-5. Bought my wife one about 6 months ago (a 1998 Mk2 1.8iS) and she's loving it. It's the facelift model so no pop-up lights. Car has been spot on and completely reliable for the duration she's owned it (and she drives it hard). Looking at the service history (which was complete) the car has had no problems at all in the 8 years since it was originally bought by the previous owner.

My suggestions are go for a 1.8 engine - the 1.6 just doesn't have the same pulling power (it's amazing the difference 200cc make in the "fun" department). The first of the "fixed headlight" models were built from the middle of 1998 and you can probably find a decent example on medium miles (say 70k plus) on a R-plate for around £4-£4.5k. I paid around £5k for a S-reg with 54k miles. There are two versions of the 1.8i car - the 1.8iS which is a 5 speed and 15" alloys; the 1.8i Sport which is a 6 speed with aircon and a few other mod cons and running 16" alloys. The latter is a lot rarer and usually £1k - £2k more expensive than the 1.8iS - in my opinion not worth the extra money.

One word of caution - the boot space is puny and just about big enough to fit a weekend's worth of gear in if you go away for the weekend. Interior wise it is also quite small with not a lot of storage space. Don't make trips to B&Q in it and expect to put anything larger than a bag of screws in the car ;) A few month ago we decided to buy a hammock ( ) on a whim. Despite the fact it came packaged in a reasonably sized box I had to put the roof down and put the box on the passenger seat. Drive home (leaving wife at B&Q) and come back to collect her. On the way home it started to rain and I (and the box) got very wet ... :slap:

So, in conclusion - get your wife a 1.8iS and travel light! ;)

Good luck with the search - I'm sure she'll love it.

PS - we drove a fair few MX5's and MGF's (even a couple of MGF-T's) and the Mazda was by FAR the better car. Everything about it felt alot better and robust.

I've only driven an MX5 once but I was amazed how well they handle. Very nice car.

Been in a mates MGF and wasn't impressed.

but...

If the lady want's an MGF that's the one I'd get or you'll never hear the last of it

MX5 best of the bunch. end of

If she likes the MGF more surely that will make her happier? As long as you get newer than R they resolved one of the serious engine faults.

Our lass has a 02 mgtf and loves it.Better looking than the ugly mx 5 and very comfy, a six hour drive to scotland proved that.Only problem we have had is the head gasket went at 20,000 miles which was fixed for £300.Done another 5,000 miles no probs. Not fast but nippy, 135 bhp version but handles superb.Any questions just Pm. :)

MGF is just a Metro with a body kit! Get the MX5, cracking car mate

We had our MX5 for 7 years. Incredibly reliable and great fun.

There's not really any difference between the 1.6 and 1.8, unless you get the 87bhp one they produced as a "special", lol, morons.

I can't slag off the MGF as I've never had one, but I know enough to say DONT! ;)

Oh, and of you're interested, the 1.6 engine is good for 300bhp when the wife gets bored and wants some excitement ;) Although it took my wife 5 years before she let me get my grubby paws on it :)

Plenty of toys available for the 5 too, not sure about the MGF.

Don't buy a BRG one, they smell.
