Engine Cooling Idea II The Sequel

Hi,

Just thought I would keep you posted on experiments at the Southern Californian College of the Z.

I pulled off the Rubber trim at the top of the bulkhead from the driver side, to a piece of wiring loom that enters the bulkhead. I then proceeded to empty a years worth of rain in 20 seconds onto the windscreen and none of it entered the engine bay. Removing that rubber trim must create a least 10 square inches of ventilation, pretty valuable I would have thought.

Also what does the rubber trim on the underside of the bonnet at the front do, has anybody any ideas?

The rubber trim on the next Twin Turbo I get is going, did I mention I've got a NA convertible now, I can't remember!!!! LOL

All the Best,

Mark

Mark,

i know exactly what yur talking about as i had the same idea last summer (no 'onest) but i never got round tuit.

I can't see that water will ingress into the bay except perhaps when stationary, but I would say low risk. If you replace the strip in winter that should minimise it still further. Engine noise /smell may increase. The cabin air intake are around there and may suck in some of the engine bay vapour etc. Let me know how it goes, I might do it this time.

I would advise against removing the strip at the front as it prevents metal/metal contact and air will force thru at speed and create lift. Don't do it.

Hello Coogs,

Seriously mate I don't think water will enter the engine bay even in winter or when stationary. Have a go yourself the trim easily reattaches and when you take it off there is a metal lip. Get a bucket of water and slowly pour it over the windscreen and none of it enters the engine bay.

But would a test not be better to get a hi pressure washer and spray it from all directions?

Rain is not going to come down your windscreen slowley? Not having a go here, but it just seems wierd. Why would Nissan with all the development they put into the car, put this rubber trim there, if it has no point?

I think Nissan put it there for sound insulation and to stop engine smells getting out.Yes a pressure washer would get water in there but does a pressure washer represent normal weather conditions. Rain at 50+ Bar, might need a rethink on umbrellas if it ever happens!

Mark,

I did the mod today. easy. I have made 3 cuts so that I can vary the size of the "vent". I have left a 3 inch length on the far drivers side cos at that point there is no lip. Then i have cut again at the point near the centre of the car where the bulkhead curves further under the bonnet. I replaced all but the centre piece. I now have a 12 inch "vent" above the rear engine bay area. If I need more i can remove the 2nd length which runs along the right hand bonnet area, leaving the 3 inch strip in place. I put some black insulating tape over the exposed lip so it doesn't show from the outside.

I have not driven the car yet, but this seems an incredibly easy mod to help engine cooling and no outlay. And no ugly (usually IMHO) bonnet vents to ruin the bonnet line.

I can't see water being a problem except in a car wash (nver use em) or hand washing. But I can put the trim back on for that. Simple.

A test drive may reveal a prob...I'll let u knowww

Hi Coogs,

Nice one mate, let me know what happens!

Mark

Did a run to the shops so not exhaustive but vent appeared to be fine. Increased noise not noticeable unless you stick your head near it. I thought it changed the engine note for the driver- mmm nice.

A lot of heat comes out of that little hole after shut down. I hope the plastic panel can take it. Passenger wiper arm is warm!

The vent is at the right place - at the top of the engine bay where heat rises to, and at the back, the furthest point from the cool air entry.

Hello Mate,

Nice one Mate,

Mark

But I bet when you use your wipers on a warm day, you'll have fuck off black smears where the blade has melted onto your windscreens biggrin.gif muwahahahahahaha

CheerZ,

Andy
