If so I have a question before I call someone out......

Any ideas why my central heating works fine upstairs but I can't seem to get the radiators downstairs hot...

I have the thermostat in the living room set to 20, but it's cold in all downstairs rooms whilst the bedrooms are baking. I have tried bleeding the rads but it makes no difference.

Oh, and the rads have no individual controls either (I must get some fitted), but for now what is the best position for the controls - I assume the "in" side should be almost fully open but what about the "out" side?

Thanks in advance ;)

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'm not a heating engineer/plumber but... Both sides should be open to allow hot water to be pumped round the system I believe. At least thats how mine works.

Do you have a sealed system? it does sound like you have an air lock and if you have a big house the system maybe split (upstairs and down stairs).

If you have a sealed system you need to let more water into the system while you bleed the radiator.

If you have a header tank you might also want to check the ball cock in it to make sure it's operational.

Or I could be talking rubbish. Any how hope you get it sorted bud

i agree with dipone, dont touch them, turn the upstairs rads valves shut then back 4 or 5 turns., then open fully the downstairs, you need to pump the water round to get to the lower, its called balancing the system. so you still have water circulating upstairs, but the down#stairs should sort, might need bleeding, or top up via a filling loop. if still no joy, sound like a system flush.

he needs to say if he has zone valves or not and how many if he has and it is closed, closing the ones upstairs wont work, if you dont or only have one for all the heating system then you will have to close the ones off upstairs as said above to force the heat round down stairs if your stuck i will pm you my number and talk you through it
