Engine Cooling Idea!!

Hi Guys,

Had an idea,God knows where it came from, was having a look at the engine and noticed a the plastic cowling and rubber seal just below the windscreen wipers. I noticed that this virtually sealed the engine compartment tighter than a pressure cooker. I thought that if the rubber seal was removed then this would release some of the heat from the engine bay, when the car moves this area creates an area of low pressure (venturi effect)and would suck even more air out of the engine bay.

The downside to this is that it looks like it would let water drip down the bulkhead, and maybe damage electrical components or other items that my limited mechanical knowledge doesn't know about. What do you guys think about this, good idea or not, or has someone else done it and I am light years behind?

All the Best,

Mark

i though this as well but ure inviting water near the loom area further down....i'm hoping to go for a supra effect with mine next month and actually cut into the bonnet and mesh it in areas where water wont be a problem

Hello Tooley,

Thought that the water might damage a loom but, I thought well the heat is knackering it anyway, and how much water would really get down there? Have you got any pics of the Supra mesh effect as I have not seen one close up?

Maybe we should ask the loom how it wants to die, water or fire!!!!

Cheers Mate

Mark

there is another way around the loom issue you could silicone it in place but im not sure whether silicone eats looms and if you wanted to get at it later it would be a pain to take apart......the only good piccy i can think of is on the members setions in the 200+club site and look for glenns picture....the actual cuts into the bonnet im gonna do are only about 2inches wide by 6inches long with a top mesh very similar to the mesh on the new rovers and a heat restant sponge under that that should stop water pouring in but still allow plenty hot air out when used in conjunction with the nose cone i have as im convinced that all the heat under the hood is not healthy especialy when stood after a long drive...im also toying with the idea of cutting away the area directly behind my intercoolers to allow proper airflow through them

Sounds good mate,

I agree with you I think the heat problem is one of the foundations of the ZX's reliability problems. The mods you are doing sound cool mate(scuse the pun!), is glenns modifications in the 200sx site and what is their address?Let us know how you get on?

All the Best,

Mark H

Dont do it. Water will also piss all over your battery and it will go dead cos water conducts electrickery!

Willie

Agreed - Not a Good idea in the slightest - Yeah on paper it sounds good but i wouldn't try it !

If you want Ventilation get some proper Bonnet Vents in - I believe the Ginger Ninja has some sources - See the MAC 1 Stillen Beast !

A better way to do this is isolate the sources of the heat and insulate them - i.e Turbos and manifolds !

Heat build up in engine is responsbile for degredation in the hoses and some of the sensors however - If you have 70K + on your car i would suspect the damage as been done !

Please please buy it - im gettin desperate now god damit !!!

Hi,

I must admit I wasn't at this stage thinking of carving away at the plastic cowling surrounding the windscreen wipers and protecting the battery. There is a little bit of rubber trim on the bulkhead on the driver side above the Master cylinder, is there anything major that could be affected below that if I removed it?

Also Nico just wondered how you go about insulating Turbos and manifolds, or are you winding me up again!!!

Mark

Nico, forgot to ask is the Ginger Ninja Mac1?

its a shame the turbos are where they are or you could have cossie like carbon fibre guards to use as heat sinks......where im cutting into will not make much diffrence if water does get in which it wont as a run off pipe and the sponge will make sure it doesnt. the two holes will run symetricly either side of the block and not come into contact with any of the loom. ive looked long and hard at maccas and johnnys bonnet and it will get rid of some heat but will also let in more water than my idea and also not let out as much heat as the heat isnt being generated where the hole is i'm convinced my two holes will provide a better air flow through and out but i'll gladly hold my hands up if im wrong

lol ginger ninja and macca being one and the same can you imagine a brundlefly type experiment and mixing those two together.....poor macca going all hulkomanic on people when they start calling him all the ginger names under the sun or the ginger whinger being amazed at the good lookin women he now gets to sleep with

wot about a macooley? or a tinja?

Hi Mark, Got your mails but darn't reply! (virus still causing big shit)

The nose cone i can either tell you how to do it or I have a spare - breath on it & swap + deal & it for yours? - Mail me either way, & I'll get a mail to you from next door :-(.

I have an original spare ally Z bonnet, im also looking at the venting situation, but no-one wants to touch it or it looks a bit bolt on 'naff' - the best i've found so far is the Mitsu' 4x4 pick up!!! scoop, ironic but sel-la-vie. But it looks a trigiometry epic to fit. Anyon3e got any other ideas?

harve

Hello Harve,

Good to hear from you mate, I was worried that those allegations about me in the News of the World, were made Public knowledge on the Forum.

They were never proved your honour(HIC !),

no seriously I think your front panel is the bollox and I don't want to sound decadent but I just bought a Convertible Z tonight and that is want I am Gonna put it on.

Some of the other front panels on other Z's,(no one on this forum of course)just don't go with the Z's lines.

Give us a ring mate, I am Happy if you tell us how to do it myself, which a lot of ex girlfriends have done on a saturday night, yeah yeah yeah lets face it we've all been there!

Or if I give you some wonga/beer, no worries

don't touch the stuff myself.

DIY instructions are a worry because the HSE have issued me with warning(same as on High Tar Cigarettes)from my firefighting days!

What does your bonnet with the vents look like the Convertible is going in for a bodykit in the future, and I am probably gonna bung in a Kakimoto RacingTT Lump imto it.

Sorry been boozing it up all night as I have just bought the convertible Z.

Mark

Good to hear from you Mate (I am not pissed honestly, I've only 7 pint sssssshh of stelllaaaaaaaaioish)

Please ignore the previous posts by Mark Hanley as this is him sobered up and of total remorse about the condition he was in when posting these threads.

He will as of this moment be leaving the forum and Joining tha AA Forum, if any members know of a link to this forum please inform him of this and he would like to ask is this a natural progresion as part of owning a Z or interacting with Nissan Dealers.

Mudguards,

Harve,

Forgot mate my number is 0777 337 5383,

were you doing metal Z footplates, I heard a rumble a while ago.

Mudguards,

Mark Hanley

Tooley Mate,

Saw a New Kia MPV (yuk) today and that had a scoop on the bonnet that I thought might look quite nice on a Z, turned either way, just an idea?

Mark

MARK,

You lucky bugger, tell us more about the convertable, what colour, what year, how much? Love to see some pics.

Tim

Hello Tim,

Can't believe my luck, bloke who sold it lived one mile away from me,I got on the phone pronto, first guy to ring him, pestered the guy to let me see it that evening, then haggled him down. It's a 94 on L plate, pearlescent white, 34000 km on the clock,it's the cleanest Z I have seen. He had it down as a twin turbo and the guy didn't know squat about cars. I pointed out to him that there were no turbos on it, he said what are these then and pointed to the cam covers (oops)!!!

Been sitting with smug expression on face for hours/days!

Cheers Mate,

Mark

PS Has anybody else on forum got one?

Mark, you lucky git! Shame no turbos but a convertible is well rare in the UK so will get loads of ladies eyes on it. Can't wait to see it at Billing, assuming you are going to be there? Get some pics of it into rides soon!!

Naca ducts, I think thats wot you call them similar to those on a F40. That should shift some air from under the bonnet. Another poss is E type louvres pressed into your bonnet. Personnally as its lasted 10 years in our wonderful temperate climate I am all for leaving well alone as the loom is prolly ready cooked anyway!

Slight other matter does the plastic venturis under the nose each side on the series 11's really improve the flow thru the I/Cs and to the brakes as advertised? Read somewhere that this was a cheap mod for earlier cars. They're supposed to drop the air pressure behind the I/Cs to increase airflow.

Willie

Thanks for the replies,

Yeah John the convertible only came in NA so I thought it would be unusual to have someone drop TT into it. Whats happening at Billing is that the Jap Motor extravaganza?

Don't know when I shall have some pics in rides as I haven't got a digital camera!

Willie don't know the answer to your question about the intercoolers mate!

Mark

Yes the JAE at Billing.
