Hi guys,

I have a problem with my 1991 300ZX TT auto, hopefully someone can help....

At the moment, when "D" is selected the car won't change into top gear. When accelerating, the 'box changes from 1st to second with no problems, but then won't shift into 3rd. At the moment, we've checked the fluid level which is fine (checked after a run with the engine running).... Can anyone tell me if there is a fuse that controls the shift into top that could have blown, or if there are any other obvious things to check?

Does It Not Shift Into 3rd At All What About Overdrive Does That Work?

seems like the car thinks it is in 2 position all the time if you dont have 3rd and 4th...could well be some sort of selector sensor...look here in the online service manual

what if you select gears manualy does it shift up then?

 

or does car over rev before changing up?

 

try cleaning the filter and changing the fluid

probably a knackered box, they do that when they are giving up the ghost.

Check your oil, if its brown the clutch pack in the box has disolved, and the bits of it have blocked the strainer, you may find if you nail it in 2nd up to about 70 it will shift into 4th.

 

If your oil is brown, you might get a bit more life out of it by changing the autobox oil and cleaning out or replacing the strainer, but this will only bee a temporary measure and sooner or later youll lose all the gears.

Your problem mirrors the problem i had with my last Z, i changed the shift solenoids and fluid first costing about £200 but the box was dead and ended up having a manual conversion.

could have gone into safety mode ( limp home ) I believe a common cause is corrosion on the contacts of the temp sensor situated on the silver alloy coolant pipe at the front of the engine. This tells the ecu the engine is overheating so it restricts the cars performance.

Yes but it doesn't stop it changing gear.

sounds like a dead box mine did the same thing and it was toast

Thanks for all your replies. I'm really hoping that the gearbox isn't toast so I've been going through the diagnostic testing in the workshop manual, which is a laborious task without the tool..... Anyone know where I can get one?

i have a recon box if you need one £375 with large aftermarket oil cooler which is vital to keep the gearobx cool, and prevent it burning out

 

it has approx 10k miles on it

In my job i talk to nissan dealers alot, so when my box died i priced up a new one from nissan.

 

Nearly 3 grand including the VAT!

sounds like what mine did, there is a little o ring on the high gear clutch pack that went, after i rebuilt the box and refitted it :( so had to take it out again lol.
