Hi,

I'm new to the forum, and new to Z32 ownership. I've just bought a nice Jap import Non Turbo.

I have just called the local Nissan dealer to get a quote for a timing belt change - the price is rediculous - so I'll do it myself... however, one question first. The dealer said the aircon needs disconnecting to change the cambelt... is this true?

Is the engine 'safe'? Ie if the belt snaps, do the valves hit the pistons or not?

Thanks

Dave

Aircon needs disconnecting to do the cambelt? Bwahahahahahahahaha  Thats too funny

Depends on the revs when the belt lets go really. As long as the cams don't have the inertia to carry on opening the valves then they will settle 'off-lobe' and the engine will be fine... Wouldn't want to risk it though...

oh lordy!

well the belt for the A/C needs disconnecting LOL!! :D

Thanks everybody. Very helpful forum - I've learnt a lot already!

I'll tackle the belt myself I think. After looking at the Journal entry It doesn't look too bad - Is there space to get a reasonable size puller on the crank pully - or is it a case of levers, mallets and swearing?

What about locking the cam shafts, are there locating pin holes or do I need a special tool?

The other thing that would be handy... a photo of a UK (inside) fusebox lid! Mine is entirely Japanese!

its not too bad a job at all, once every thing is out of the way there is quite a bit of room, even more so on an NA i would imagine.

plenty of room for a puller :)

just timing marks on the cam sprockets, genuine nissan belts have marks on the belt also allowing everything to line up in a foolproof way!! :D

Yeah, it's no too bad a job, although time consuming for sure. Me and me dad did mine on a TT, took around 5hrs taking it nice and steady
