Need some pointers here guys.......I was reversing my N/A back up my drive, just dipped the clutch a little and the engine cut out, started back up first tun of the key and continued to reverse up the drive, stopped and put hand brake on and let the car idle......the revs began rising and falling 1500 down to 500 for about 30 seconds then settled back to normal (850ish), the engines done many things, which I've sorted with little problem, in the past but never this........... any ideas

C'mon guys.................any ideas

AFM? mine does this but its a TT would be interested to know what the cause may be.

Unplug the grey TPS connector with the engine running and reconnect...

the AFM was replaced about 2 months ago, never thought about the TPS.

cheers guys will try tomorrow and see what happens, however conzult reports all ok

Thanks

snap mine has done exactly the same today. stopped in a parking space and the car just died. started back up revs irratic rising and falling between 2-300 rpm then dies again. started for a 3 rd time and it dies straight away. left it for an hour problem gone for now but revs not as steady as they were before the problems. disconnected tps this evening and reconnected.revs are a little more steady. connected datascan and there are no error codes etc.

i suspect either the idle valve needs cleaning so will clean that and the throttle bodies tomorrow .

strange how it both happened to us both on the same day. might be because of the wet weather we are having and connectors getting a little soggy lol.

update. drove up the road today after i gave it an oil change. it started to misfire and wouildnt rev took out of gear and the engine stalled.had to coast it into a parking space. i tried to restart it and no go 2nd time it sort of started but was extremely lumpy 4-600 rpm range i would say then cut out.

10 minutes later after frantic wiggling of connectors etc (not really doing much) the car starts much better but still lumpy.

it ticks over but every now and again the engine note changes and the revs drop from 700 rpm to 5-600 rpm.

HELP ive cleaned the ptu connectors maf connectors, checked the coil pack connectors and injectors. what the hell could this be i need the car as its my only form of transport!!

could it be ptu if so anybody have a known good one i could try

bump!

bump please

Interested to know the cause of this too. I've got a 200SX, not a 300ZX but it does exactly the same thing, with varying degrees of regularity. It went just about the entire summer without doing it once, but as it started getting colder it reappeared again. I've got an S13 with an SR20DET swapped in in place of the CA18, but it did similar things with the CA before I yanked it out, so I'm thinking it's a bit of corroded wiring in the main loom (the SR swap splices parts of the S14 and S13 loms together)?. I've had the TPS changed, the plugs change, the AFM changed, and the IAC valve cleaned. Of all the things I think cleaning the IAC valve made the most difference out of all these? Make of that what you will.

Out of interest and seeing as you have a manual, does it make any difference what gear you're in? If I'm in gear it idles oddly (between 1000-1200), but if I drop it into neutral then the revs drop to about 400-500. Extremely strange, especially as it only does all this stuff occasionally and not all the time

check for ECU errorcodes first.

Maybe this helps to track down the cause.

You wrote you have cleaned some connectors..did that include the CAS connector ?

This because the CAS (connector) is often overlooked and can cause all sorts of weird problems as well. (and after all the CAS is made by mitsubishi, so can't be good anyway ;) )

faulty maf or connector
