... what is generally destroyed?

My dad has found a very straght, 1990 lwb TT at a farm he picks up from. its been sat for 18 months after the cam belt broke. i was just wondering what damage a zed would normally inccur? anything other than the usual bent valves? he's asking £650 for it, so i wasn't sure if it would be a good investment, to either rebuild/reengine, drive if i can insure it ok, or move on and put towards the 200sx i was planning on buying.

any help or advice grealy appriceated

cheers

Dave

valves, pistons but the extent of the damage you wouldnt know till it was stripped down then you could have bore damage, crank damage maybe cam damage. this is what i think i could be wrong

it is an auto it could just be the belt....IIRC the torque limiter disengages the drive so quick when the belt breaks it results in no damage...do a few searches i'm sure its been discussed on here before....or call top zed mechanic Martyn on 07913595032 he'll know for sure

If buying for £650 you cant really go wrong, might as well just put a 2nd hand engine in (£1000 for engine) , and have yourself a bargain

Its got to be worth sticking a belt on and trying it you may be lucky they dont always bend valves etc .

Due to it being a V6 its very rare to do any damage apart from just the belt. Since the engine is basically 2 3cylinder engines, as long as the engine isn't screaming its nuts off when the belt lets go, then all the cams settle 'off lobe' and all valves are shut so the pistons don't touch them...

Obviously check out the rest of the car if it's been sat all that time - seized bits and stuff. Could be a bargain though.

Make sure you have a bit of cash in reserve just in case.

In my experiance belts go on start up more often than when driving, its that first pull on the belt that does it, so as the Duff man says you might not or probable wont have any damage. Try and find out about how the belt went and history of the car.

If it is very tidy as you say and you don't want the hassle of new engine then you could allways break it, I'm sure you could more than recoup 650 in spare parts.

I keep old cambelts just for this reason - no expenditure before you're sure its not done any damage ;) Either that or I'm just a hoarder LMAO If you decide to go for it and want a belt to try on it, let me know, you can have one free of charge. DO NOT run the car on it though - just put it on and do a compression test ;) Just buy me a pint when you see me for the postage cost :) :duffer: LOL

Like Legrath said. Its a bargain either way.

cheers peeps. i think i'm gonna go have a look and scope it out properly. i work for a motor factor, so i get really good price on parts if that engine is saveable
