it is still the same as they have to make allowance for inaccurate speedos as most are although i did hear a while ago they was thinking about zero to;erance but thats plain stupid. i think speed cams give you about 10 mph over but i wouldnt like to test that rule but im sure thats right.

it's never been proved and i for one even though my speedo is 5mph out wouldn't test it with the cameras or the rozzers

10% for all forces but then depending on where you are will determine how much more of a margin you have. Some are 10%+1 some are 10%+3, some are just 10%

To clarify, Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have set speeding tolerance guidelines at 10% + 2, ie in a 30 you can do 35, in a 50 you can do 57 etc...that's not say you can't get done for 31 in a 30, you are still speeding. Hope that clears it up for everyone.

IMHO you shouldn,t get prosecuted for 32 in a 30, speedometers can read up to 10% innacurate,I would certainly question the case,if a fixed camera is dtecting at 32 I would ask for the calibration data ,and when the camera was last calibrated,(this information is available if requested)

on the other hand I would also look at the speedo you have fitted(i.e delimimter chip etc) to see if it is still working correctly. you may also be able to borrow a Tom Tom sat nav which gives accurate speed.

this person got done by a stationary permenent speed camera at 32

If they live in the right area they will get sent on a 'speed awareness' type course (only £60 :) ). I got sent on one for doing 38mph in a 30mph zone (I knew the camera was there and thought it was a 40 zone :slap: ).

It was actually a pretty good course considering, made me open my eyes and get some advanced driving instruction. The actual offence I got it for was a bit of a joke (dual carraige-way midnight, but in center of Plymouth so was a 30mph), but I probably deserved it through Karma at all the other speeding! Anyhow there's a time and a place for it I reckon, not that everyone will agree obviously.

i got snapped doing 36 in a 30 by a speed cam :mac1: and got sent on one of those courses too. wasn't too bad really - quite enjoyable (the best bit was not getting any points!)

you can get fined for going 1mph over the limit.

The motorway limit is 70mph not 77, so doing 71 is illegal.

However, I think most cases of 1mph over would be kicked out of court, due to differences in speedos. The speed it looks like you are doing can be influenced by the angle you are looking at the speedo, the age of the mechanics, tyre size.

So I believe they will prosicute at 10% +2mph.

I got sent to one of those too. I questioned the speed-choice lecturer about the inaccuracies of the braking distances stated in the Highway code. Re: the fact that they are taken from tests done in the 60s using an old Ford Anglia, with no servo assistance and all wheel drum brakes...to which her response was. “well, we believe that due to increased vehicles weights, this cancels out the modern efficient braking systems fitted to new cars and as such advise that braking distances will remain almost the same”. I of course almost uttered the words 'yer bo11ocks'. But instead quoted a number of cases where car publications, where braking was tested on newer cars and found that in some cases, 50% of the distance was knocked off the old figures. To which the only response I got was 'we can only go by our figures'...which is guess is fine, but does skirt round that issue.

I'd have to agree with some of the comments above: you can't make assumptions about what speed you have to be doing in order to be prosecuted in a given area. It's very unlikely you'd ever get done for doing 31 in a 30, however a couple of years back when I was renewing my car insurance the chap I spoke to say he'd had exactly that happen to him from a fixed speed camera in an urban area where they'd implemented a zero tolerance policy, so clearly it does happen. What would be really handy at this point is if I could remember where exactly, I think it may have been Norwich.

yeah I went on one of those courses too for doing 39 in a 30. We should form a speed awareness course club!

They said that most speed cams were set to detect above 35 and that most police would ignore drivers on the motorway doing 80.

It's the drivers responsibility to have a working, accurate speedo.

Manufacturers make them over-read as a safety margin. Almost none under read unless they're knackered / the owner has changed the wheels etc.

While ACPO guidelines are 10%+2mph, some forces are 'zero tollerance' (north wales for example).

If you're over the speed limit, you can be prosecuted, no exceptions no excuses.

I've been done at a few different amounts over the limit, but I was a bit gutted to be done at 81 in a 70. Yes, speeding is speeding, but more often than not you have to go at that speed to avoid being a mobile roadblock.

What Bob said.....

.....different authorities have different margins now. You are pretty much OK with the 10% but the +1 etc is a grey area.

If you are unsure, get GPS and drive using the indicated speed on that....

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

just been got 3week's ago /.......36 in a 30...so yeah they work....
