*sits in the corner and cries* - head gasket has gone :(

Head gasket on my zed has gone :(

She overheated a few nights ago, but I managed to get her home and she hasnt started since. Was just ticking over and the compression sounded completely off. So I thought, ok maybe its just flooded, disconnected the fuel pump fuse, and she just kept turning over and wouldnt start. Pulled the sparks out, the front two came out ok, bits of the plastic coil had melted. The center two wouldnt come out without a bit of force, and it looks like those coils had comletely melted, didnt bother with the rear two plugs... doom was looming at this point. Took the rad cap off, turned it over and water shot out of the radiator like a fooking fountain :'(

So my question, typically what does a head gasket replace cost? I cant imagine it being less than 1.5k...

It cost me £1500.

But talk to SouthwestZ. I think hes very reasonable compared to where I got mine done!

i hate to be a potential prophet of doom.. but...

the whole job may grow from a gasket job to a full rebuild.

Just depends on what caused the gasket to fail and what extra(if any) damage has been done.

£1500 is not a big sum of money in the world of Zeds, but it is a huge sum of money if you dont have it available.

Sorry to hear your news . Make sure you take yer time before making a decision.

12 hour job to repair the heads I belive probably better just to get another engine and start again

just be carefull if you buy a 2nd hand engine.

i recentely bought a 2nd hand engine which i was told was a good engine, only to find when i put it in it had lazy lifter, smoked and after only 450miles had used 5ltrs of oil and now the bottom end is knocking!

i'm just gonna build my own engine now. at least i'll know its right!

Chris.

Many people on here have had that happen, FunkySi is another. There's very few reasons why anyone would have a good engine that was for sale, they've usually been taken out becuase they are knackered and the owner has given up and got a new one. IMO its not worth fitting a second hand engine unless you have it rebuilt properly. You're driving a £35,000 plus car at the end of the day, they bite the wallet hard.
