Ive noticed recently that if i brake reasonably hard (but not full braking effort) sometimes the car stalls! Its almost as if the gearbox isnt giving up soon enough....

After closer inspection it seems to happen only when im braking quite hard and trying to turn the wheel, its bloody dangerous as if the car does stall the power steering stops and turning can be interesting!

Anyone have any idea where i should start with this?

I have checked P/s fluid, and brake fluid master cyc and brake bleed....

I have no hicas (after market wheel) smithys big brake kit, braided hoses and thats about it thats likely to effect....

Cheers all

PCV? How would they effect it (as mine has been known to smokey at idle on cold days/short journeys?)

Having checked it doesnt do it in neutral, but can be caused to stall just using the power steering alone, say on a long sweeping turn where you progressivly feed the wheel round!

Dont think its the speed sensor as if you have your foot on the accelerator during the turn this problem never happens and the power steering seems fine at different speeds..?

Auto TT stalls under heavy braking

Brake gentley then  :slap:

Had this myself once about 5 years ago when still auto. It turned out to be the TPS. Or if not I think I'd go along with Yampidog.

If it doesnt do it in neutral I would be inclined to say ATF is low, mine did exactly the same when it was low, make sure you check it while the engine is running.

I have read that PCV valves cause stalling under braking as well but never had the symptoms myself, something to do with the spring inside being gunked up I think.

I've been having the exact same problems for over three years now and nothing has resolved it. Put in new PCV valves/hoses, new TPS, all fluids are leveled correctly, etc, etc. I tends to do it more when the car is cold but I can make it happen at any point by just braking hard. The only way around it has been to release the brakes at the point where the engine seems to stall and make the car move forward slightly.

I am now thinking - after a discussion with Lymon - that there is a mechanism which releases the auto box into neutral and this isn't working correctly. I also sometimes feel the box going neutral and then engaging again as I'm on the brakes at say a junction. It is just a slight nudge agains the brakes but enough to make me think there is a switch which isn't disengaging in time. I'm no looking into that.

FWIW: cars stalling due to clogged pcv valves usually occurs whilst going around corners, not when coming to a sudden stop.

Dan

iv always been under the ilusion, that it could be due to line pressure in the autobox, and under sudden braking the car can cut out, although its not tested, the autobox being a complicated transmission has its ill effects, im not experianced in autos, as to me its one of them you either work on transmissions only or not.

i would check trans fluid levels though.

Also experienced what danny is saying in a Auto box on a 2.5 Honda Legend I had.

I was told buy one guy that the box was scoobied, but took it to a Borge Warner engineer in Chester and it was some valve seals and worn out fluid in the Torque Converter. Cost me about £200 and never gave me a spot of bother after. Or the father of one of the girls at work who bought it of me about 2 tears later.

Check the FICD valve is engaging when the car is put into drive and also when you turn the AC on.... Revs should pick up to ~900rpm under these circumstances...

Cheers guys, definatly doesnt do it in N only in drive, seems to be the PS and the brakes that can cause it to stall. I will get the fluid replaced as a starter as it probably needs doing anyway... good starter for 10 i guess.

Whats the FICD valve andy and where would i start checking it works lol
