It seems that many of you guys seem so keen on a slicktop Zed.

Other than the fact they are quite rare is there any other reason?

The fact you can take the roof off was one of the main deciding factors for me to have a Zed over an RX7, Supra or GTO. I also had a T-bar MR2 tubs before so felt I could not let the "roof off" thing go.

So go on.....why???

Whoever said there was any division in this club is obviously talking rubbish.

Pete was just playing with us, he has an opinion on the best type of Zed but would help and chat with any Zed owner whatever model and is a top bloke, although a bit old for 1/4 miles as it makes his dentures fall out :p

Just made up,i believe the official term is "Supreme Z" :D

pretty sure actual term is "base model" or "poverty spec" LOL

you cant beat posing with the targas off on a sunny day,all the girlies looking. i cant imagine theres that much difference with a slicktop for handling on public roads. on a track maybe with high speed corners etc but you cant do that on public roads so my targa version for me i think.

I hate to dissapoint you, but the girlies are actually thinking "w@nker" when they see us with the roofs off

I have a LWB TT Targa, and have had the roofs off once. I honestly think it looks GHASTLY, and that's a word I've never used in my life, but perfectly describes how I feel about the big missing sections on my car without the targa tops

As far as Slicktops are concerned.....

I've driven a couple of Pauls, and can honestly say there is a HUGE difference in the feel of the car. Forget all the stupid stats you're posting, you need to actually drive them hard to understand what everyones fighting about.

If I had the money I would have both. As it stands I'm more than happy with my 300 limousine, but I'll keep the black tinted roof panels ON. ;)

you dont dissapoint me bud. i live in essex where all the girlies are materialistic. they see a roof off on a high performance car and , well their essex girls, i ll say no more. you should try it bud. you may even enjoy yourself. lol.

The 'slicktop' was introduced as a cheaper alternative to targas part way through the Z32's production life.

I like targas - as Royal says the Z32's no sports / track car.

Each to their own though!

as far as i know, the 'slicktop' was available from 89-99?

and cost 20,000yen more?

Not 100% but i'm sure there was a thread on it before

Paul.

they really are different cars,i have both a slicktop and a targa top,the Slicktop is a far more positive car to drive fast,in my opinion the ultimate Zed,no good for posers though ;)

Paul.

Precisely why I don't have one... well, not really. I just quite like driving a "convertible", but since I'm not a fan of the zed convertible look T-tops are a great compromise. Have to say though that the general consensus is the slicktop handles better due to improved stiffness.

"The fourth generation Fairlady Z was launched in Japan on Jul 10 1989. The new range boasted six basic models: a normally aspirated 2 seater with coupe or T bar roof bodywork....... etc"

Taken from Datsun 280ZX/300ZX by Brian Long. Page 117.

and further on he says... "At the end of 1996 the two seater models lost the T bar roof option and the convertible was dropped from the range..... etc"

The 2 seater coupe continued right to the end of production in this form.

So clearly the coupe roof or slicktop as we know refer to it WAS the model of choice.

I rest my case :D :D

Slicktop = cheapy!

SlickPete's doesn't even have an interior it's that pikey! :p

(also all slicktops were 2 seaters while all Z32s used in serious motorsport were 2+2!) :nana2:

a corporate decision Im sure with input from the sales department, rather than one based on the merits of the car.

Well of course it has an interior, probably in better condition than yours, since its carefully stored in my loft rather than fitted to the car getting worn away :slap:

detecting in improvement in handling with a "non targa" is like detecting an increase in power after fitting iridium plugs to a saxo, its all in the mind LOL

I was told slicktops were a specail order in japan .A few went to the us for motorsport use because glass targas were banned from many forms of motorsport due to saftey reasons.

maybe its nothing to do with the targa roof that MAY make the slicktop feel as tho it handles better but the fact its a short wheel base that makes the handling feel different:confused:

Hi,

Might be because the 2+2 version had a more evenly balanced weight distribution...53 percent front/47 rear as opposed to 55/45 for the 2 seater!

I think the Z32 loses some of it's character when specified as a base model, targa-less coupe.

If you want a lightweight track-day car then a Z32 is going to be the wrong choice anyway!

Cheerz,

Jez

z32 = cruisin machine, therefore needs targas. Unfortunately men like it more than women.

ill second what AlFo said

  are you saying you both attract a lot of men then. s**t, remind me not to go to the west country without the t tops then bud.

Is that why there are so few around?
