Hi, had a look in the search part, and cant find anything.

I have some new 19" wheels, 8.5 front, and 9.5 rears.

What sizes are you guys running? 235/35 and 265/30 ????????

Thanks.....

I'd go for 245s front and 285s rear. The tyres will look stretched with those widths which you've stated. Mine need changing as they are the same widths as you've stated. I want flat tyre walls rather than stretched ones.

I wouldn't go for 245's up front if handling is a priority are it will cause quite bad tramlining.

I have 235's front ,but purely for handleing 225's are the best.

will also depend on the offset as 285 might rub but 265 will be ok

Thanks, the front offset puts the rim a bit close to the arch, so I was thinking 225 would be safer. Then theres the handling, soooooo, sounds like 225 for the front.

Rears, I think I will have to have a look as I would like big on the back.

What size are your wheels guys? Same as mine?

225 on a 8.5" wide rim is going to look really silly. If you're worried about handling, then 19s may not have been the best idea.

well I've got 265 on the front and seems ok so far and I've not even had an aligment done yet! you'll be fine with 235 or 245

well i have 8.5 front and 9 rear on 235 35 19 and 265 30 19 and they are to small ! ie: kerbs etc. next change im going 265 front and something like 295 rear.

Looks silly to me if the wheels stick out more than the tyres plus the cost of damaged wheels.

Sometimes the more information one gets the harder the choice. Lol. The rear is not much of a problem as I have plenty of room, but the front off set is possibly not ideal, being nearer to the outer arch. So I am a little concerened about it touching.

The wheels were a present from my son and he had to trust the supplier, but he was in the States so it gets a bit complicated, as these things can sometimes.

Not sure how to get round it and decide what size to fit....

Thanks for your input so far everyone. I suppose a second hand worn out 225, 235 for the front might help to see how it clears. Anyone have one near Aylesbury??????

Do you have the offsets to hand?

I'm sure 235 will be just fine unless the offset is way out

A 8.5 J rim is 215mm that means 225 is 10mm bigger than the rim the more over size you go for means more tyre wall movement (hence tramlining) and if you go big enough you can under really hard cornering roll a sufficiently oversized tyre off the rim.

Tyre manufacturers will actually secify the rim sizes for their tyres. You;ll find in general they only garentee 15mm under width to 30mm over width.

So a 8.5J wheel could legally have tyres 200's to 245's and if you have an accident where someone is hospitalised and your tyres are out of manufacturers spec your insurance will be nul and void. + if someone is killed your looking at Prison for vehiclualer Manslaughter.

If your local tyre place say that those sizes are fine for your wheels make sure you get it in writing before they fit em. That way you have a get out of jail card as you have sort Expert opinion.

Personally I like to know that what ever is on my car will do the job regardless how hard I drive it. The most fundimental upgraded for your car is the right set of tyres as those bits of rubber are all that keep you on the road and it should be IMO the most important thing to get right.

I will try and find the offsets, thanks..

MarkZx, this is what I thought. And thanks for the common sense. I have now checked on line and a 225 tyre is OK for 7.5" to 9" tyre. So this is obviously OK on a 8.5" rim.

245 front on 8.5j, 285 rear on 9.5j is spot on, fantastic balanced handling and no tramlining.

265 on 9.5j rear looks stretched and leaves the alloys open to scuffing.

What is this "tramlining" people talk about?

It's the effect the road surface has on the handling in relation to tyre width and track. It's the pulling motion you feel through the steering as you drive over irregular surfaces.

I have 19x8.5", & 19x9.5" rims. I run 235x35 up front, & 265x30 rear... & no, the 265's are not stretched.

I tried 245's on the front recently, but they scrapped badly when ever cornering.
