insucrance on imports

I have recently put a deposit down on a 91 TT manual which is being imported from japan. I have been reading the forums and came across the issue that the imports can be a problem to insure.

I am 33 and have full no-claims. i had already contacted norwich union and they gave me a quote of about 600-700 for fully comp. however i never thought of saying about it being an import. can anyone advise? or say where they get there insurance from if they own an import?

cheers

Steve

Not a problem Steve smile.gif

Norwich Union Direct dont load for import Twin Turbos, but do tell them it is imported.

Mine is insured with NU-Direct 91'JPsec Twin Turbo for around that amount they quoted you but with bodykit, wheels and zorst declared.

I tried NU Direct and they refused to insure an import at all !!!! ?

I have spoken to NU (who currently insure me) and they said that as long as there is a uk spec, then no problem. However they also said that they would not have insured me if i wasnt an existing policy holder...go figure. price was 700 quid, so no loading up for the import, i am 33, no convictions, full no claims bonus. I am a bit worried about the insurance on an import, because of resale-ability. if the insurance companies are making it difficult to insure/making it more expensive, then it may become hard to sell an import versus a uk model. Hense i am looking at uk model tomorrow even though it has high (120k) mileage, compared to the import (60k) i have already put a deposit on!

cheers

You know what I find f*cked up! mad.gif

You can import a left hand drive 1990 911 carrera 2 or 4, an M3 or an Alpina B10 BiTurbo like my brothers mate did and still pay £400 quid classic insurance! mad.gif

So why does Mr insurance company look at Japanese imports differently to Left hooker imports(have you tried pulling out from behind a bus in a lefthand drive)?

I think insurance co's saw a licence to print money with the jap import market taking off(Quintin Wilson didnt help) and started rubbing there dirty little mitts together!

Back in 98 when I first got my import insured no-one had a problem - but now they moan about different parts that have to bought down from the mountains of Nankang on the back of a donkey before being but on the slowest chinese junk heading for these parts! mad.gif

w mad.gifnkers!

Blimey, I'm 31 with full NCD and NU Direct were going to charge me £990!!!

In the end I've kept my insurance with Privilege (£840).

Insurance is an ass!

any of you who have recently done your insurance will probably have noticed that the twat on the other end of the line informs you about how all insurance companies are now linked together to prevent fraudulent claims and suchlike. Some also ask for the reg number and then tell you what car you have got, so if they know all this stuff then they should know whether or not your car is an import, mine diddnt ask if i had a jap, in my opinion they should know, twats the lot of em...

actually scoops, the data they have that gives your car from the plate is very restricted.

you can buy a direct link into the dvla (or a datagrab like the postcode/address data that everyone has) but it does only show make model, colour, engine details.

HPI buy a different service from dvla, which shows engine number, chassis number and soon will have number of previous owners info etc.
