NZR- Need PC HELP :(

Sorry for treating the 300zx forum like my local PC World helpdesk but I am going mad with this PC at the mo!!

Freeserve Home time is recently booting me out after only being connected for 5 mins or so. Even though this is REALLY!! annoying I can JUST about bear it.

What really gets me mad is that if i'm in an MSN chat MSN will decide to FREEZE up as soon as I lose the connection. Once reconnected on the net it will remain freezed up until a couple of minutes then it will wake up again.

I never had this problems before seems to have started now in the last couple of months. Also, sometimes I'll be looking at a web page and then the mouse cursor freezes and then I notice so too has the keyboard!!

I am sure this is all net related as when not online my pc behaves itself.

Any advice will be MUCH appreciated.

THANKS!!

sounds to me as if your pc needs a spring clean...

best bet is to download 'Evidence Eliminator' (or something similar) and run the safe shutdown/restart - this will get rid of all the crap on your hard drive

PS if EE requires a user name or the like download the crack from www.crackam.com

Do you have an internal PCI modem? my bet would be on that, borrow an external modem from someone and your problems will probably dissappear.

Mike

I've run Norton Systems works and still it happens. Not sure where to get the EE from, I'll look.

Mike - I do use an external Model.

Well thanks guys.

Try another account with differnet ISP:

Try freebie account with www.ukf.net to test

Try a different modem, I can lend you on - hell I can give you one mate.

Try removing all the network protocols (control panel, network, ah shit ill talk you thru that later)

Get another machine and run find - look for winsock.dll and copy onto floppy, copy from floppy onto your machine.

My money is on the modem,

Glen.

are you using a lot of USB devicves? when one USB device locks up ic can cause the others (ie keyboard and mouse) if your modem is USB try getting a convertor to a serial port,

without reinstalling your entire windows operatin system I don't know what else to suggest, I reinstall my windows PC every 6 months

Mike

Glen,

Thanks for the modem offer. I have a spare I'll swap it and see what happens.

If it still doesnt work, I might need that Control Panel, network stuff info. smile.gif

THANKS!!

Hello Glen mate,

Kind offer, alas I never get home that early!! I wish!

I'm gonna try a few things and email you if it continues to play up.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi George,

Email playing up, post here if you want to reinstall network protocols,

It goes something like (scuse me whilst I do this from memory, only have XP boxes in me house smile.gif )

Control Panel

Network

Click on all and remove

Reboot

Add (memory running out frown.gif ) Adapter - Microsoft - Dial up Adapter

Add - Protocol - Microsoft - TCP/IP

OK

Reboot.

Cant guarantee it will work but it work be a matter of course for me if someone bought in a machine that was having connextoid problems.

Also Free$erve maybe timing you out (or your PC maybe) try -

downloading a file then browsing to see if you get more than 5 minutes

George, what Windows Version are you using, 95-ME? If so, do you have a lot of stuff running by the clock - if yes, you have to turn those off. The items that you have down by the clock are programs that are running and when you have alot of them running it lowers your system resources which can result in small problems that you describe.

If you have Windows 98-ME

You can disable some of those programs from starting up at boot -

Go to -Start-

click -Run-

type in msconfig

click OK

At the top of the new window you'll see a tab that says -startup- click on that.

Uncheck what's not needed - I would say that you should leave "ScanRegistry" and "SystemTray" checked.

If you're using ME there are a few more things that are needed (checked that is) but off the top of my head I can't remember I'll have to get back to you.

When you're done click ok and it will ask you to restart, restart and see if things run okay.

Lavone,

i've done as you said and disabled some of my startup programs, amazed at how much SH*T was going on in the background, never new that trick.

All seems to be okey, I'll have to give her a good test now. BTW - I wonder if you know why my cursor has a parallel line to the right of the arrow??? Its had that for some time now??

Thanks again for the detailed help. smile.gif Much appreciated smile.gif
