After being away 2 weeks (and having to jump start the car) I noticed coolant driping from under the expansion tank...

It's dribbling out of the overflow in the neck.

My first port-of-call is to replace the rad cap as this seems to have come up on many previous posts related to similar problems.

Was thinking of getting a nice blingy one but they all seem to have a higher pressure rating than the standard 1.2bar.

My concearn is, if you increase the pressure in your cooling system aren't you asking for trouble, like heater matrix failure and leaks from any other possible weak point of a 16 year old cooling system...?

One at a time please....

I aslo should mention that i havent topped up the expansion tank for over 6 months and this is the first time it's done it. Coolant started to overflow as soon as the engine got warm.

Agreed, an uprated rad cap will obviously put more pressure on the old rubber pipes and bring forward any potential failures :( I'd stick with a new stock cap if you don't want the hassle..

Hi

Should you top up the expansion tank?

Surely the point of it is that water expanding from the rad does this? And then sucks it back again when it cools.

Hey Spencer, I think we have our wires crossed.

I had my cam-belts changed and as part of the routine you need to drain and refill the cooling system, this was done for me by Zworld. So what i meant was the bottle has not been topped up since it was drained and refilled.

I now have a replacement stock rad cap :D .
