Hahaha,

The Cult of the Dead Cow.

A hacking group who claim they found a "Back Door" in Micrsoft Office, put there by Microsoft so they can see of you have illegal installations. Microsoft denied that it existed, so "The Cult of the Dead Cow" made a trojan to implimant this "Back Door"

There are patches for Office which closes it, but Microsoft still say it doesnt exist becuase a file had to be on your computer which then works like any onther Torjan.

Dont worry Iain, your firewall is simply doing its job, keeping out the f***in script kiddlets and ankle biters.

Any twat can get a copy of Netbus Server and send it to someone, just dont ever ever ever run an exe attachment from email, keep your A/V upto date (IE every day) and use a good Firewall.

Then the muppet trojan scanners will leave you alone, you wanna see how many probes (ooer) you get when your IP falls into DSL or CableModem range, loads and loads a day...

You are ok on dial up unless someone *really* has it in for you.

The CDC are a funny lot: http://www.cultdeadcow.com/

Not the sort of people you'd want to cross though wink.gif

Choz,

Glen

Ive spoken with a few members of cDc they are nice blokes,

one of my servers gets scanned about 4000 times an hour by automated trojans and scripts kiddies, thats what you get though for having 300 IPs on one box smile.gif

For home security I use a linksys router with inbuilt proxy and firewall, it does its job quite well and allows one to share net connection with the rest of the lan.

if you scan someone back who scans you for a trojan you will usually find they have it installed and their box is open

Very Scary - Good advice guys.

I'm having a cable modem put in tomorrow. Looks like I'm gonna have to update my virus software.

COS! You need anti virus software AND a firewall when running cable modems. Go and get yourself Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm. Try downloading them from www.grokster.com this is a file share prog v. similar to morpheus. Lots of stuff on there, games, vids, MP3s, software etc etc.

Also updating software on cable is a lot better. V. fast downloads, don't take 1/4 the time of dial up.

Enjoy your new toy!!!!

I WANT my bloody cable modem back, ffs we are still using steam powered local loops on the Isle of shite.

I have had to seriously reduce my pornographic tendencies since going back to ISDN frown.gif

LOL

I had ISDN. There is a good difference. With Modems you can have a 56k modem but you will only connect at 46- 24. The heighest I have seen is 52 once.

But with ISDN you always get 64k and if you have a dual one 128k. I had a dual one but could not find a free server that allowed you to used it.

ISDN you can get downloads of over 7.5kbs. If you get a dual one around the 16kbs mark.

Stuart

Folks, ISDN and 56k cannot be compared, ISDN connects instantly - the ISDN 'modem' is basically a network card hooking you straight into a digital network, hence no modulation (MO) or demodulation (DEM)

However at £27/month its a rip off - compared to my old ntl Cable 'Modem'

I have a way to get 128k dual connection on surftime but its a well kept secret, well to me anyway as I dont want it stopped smile.gif

Get ISDN and a onetel.net surftime account, they are such muppets that they dont bar second line bonded access and never ever bill you for dual access, £12.99 per month for 128k access surftime.

I thought they would can my surftime account for abuse but nope, always dualled hehe.

Dont tell em tho wink.gif wink.gif

Glen

Jeez! £27/month is expensive! I get Blueyonder broadband for £25, 128k/bit upload 512k/bit download. Is broadband available in Isle of White Wigs??

I get d/loads of around 60-70kbs on Onetel broadband for £10 per month. About the only good thing that company does

Lads forget ISDN go for broadband and connect at 576kbs(490kbs is the best i've seen so far)24 hour connection, use the phone while on line all for £25 a month.

I'm with PIPEX.co.uk. you can get 2000kb/s but its a lot dearer.

I use ZoneAlarm, its OK. www.zonelabs.com

Andy,

Have you downloaded the zonelog analyser? Check the # of attacks your pc gets each time on line.....scary!!

Steve

No I haven't but I get few attacks as I sit behind an ISDN router with a couple of very basic filters - that cuts 95% of the crap.

Most of the junk I get comes from BT's DNS servers - not sure what they're asking me but they're not getting an answer ... wink.gif
