I fitted an after market steering wheel ages ago with out the hicas Boss. I have been thinking about getting the proper boss (obviously the cheaper option) or go with the whole ellimination thing? what is the general opinion on this mod please. and could those who have done it let me know the avarage costs and benefits.

Keep the aircon - I was without mine for 18 months when it needed regassing and I hated the car in the summer :(

my aircon is being junked and an unorthodox flywheel fitted along with my koyo rad, should run sweet.

HICAS is a bag of crap, never worked since i got the car and eaten through a pair of brand new tyres in 8 weeks because it was permanently steering right, soggy back end (even after new shocks and arms) wobbles about on uneven road. In short useless and going as soon as i go for the manual conversion.

 

Rear subframe, diff and everything else is being switched.

 

Yep, mine didn't even have a belt going ot the pulley of the aircon when i got the car so it's one thing that's going.

 

I need the series 2 fan control pod really so i can direct the air up to the windscreen without having to turn off econ but apart from that it's fine without.

 

Windows down, t-top off and you're sorted for the summer :D

My hicas is being binned along with the air-con and anything else that saps power or is in the way.

The purpose of the system is much misunderstood. The system mimics the racing technique of the 'scandanavian flick'. a momentary flick of opposite lock before turn-in to un-load the suspension before the turn. results in a more settled flatter, smoother cornering. A massive safety by-product of the system is that of emergency evasive swerves or lane changes being much less likely to result in a loss of control. It has saved my bacon big style once when a bit of 4" by 4" wood fell off a lorry on the M6 and i was safe thinking how did I miss that?????!!!!!.

 

A well maintained HICAS system will never feel woolly. If it feels woolly and your HICAS parts are in good condition then its not HICAS its probably shot subframe bushes. Some people point out "So why do racers lock it out then?" It is because in the course of a season many changes will be made to the set-up of the car trying different geometries for different tracks. From the off with the Z no one knew what associated changes would be needed with hicas to make sure that it 'complimented' all the possible geometry settings of a race season as no one had the time or money to figure it out thus locking it out or removing it altogether became the racers way of running a Z.

 

My advice If yours in poor condition and your too chav to get it sorted lock it up / remove it and forget about it. If it is in good nick leave it, as it may save your life one day. I would liken removing good hicas to removing an airbag. Even if you never have to have it do that for you (fingers crossed) it is certainly making you a smoother driver than you are again IF it is in good working as designed condition which is a big if on a 15+ year old car

That sounds like good advice to me. I have never heard a better (arguement would be the wrong word so I will say) explanation against it or for it. Mine was fine before I changed the steering boss and even though it isnt "In action or active it still dosent give me any woolly feeling in the way the car drives. I did have it set up by a nissan dealer and the car did seem to pull to the left very slightly, but that could easily have been down to me being used to it being wrong in the firdt place? So I am going to get the correst boss and keep it. I know a lot of people remove it for wieght loss. I am not interested in that aspect as the car performs well enough for me. Thanks Chris.

The car feels alot more predictable which it removed, i loved it and i felt it handled alot better with it removed ;)

 

same here - i dont normally drive very quickly but it just seemed to tighten everything up - the hicas made everything a bit floaty.

I've noticed that mine feels significantly different when I pull out quickly, with the power on, to overtake when compared to all other cars I've driven. It feels safer than I expect in that the suspension doesn't lurch as with other cars, which is a good safety feature IMO.

It will be your aircon next as well! (Be amazed how light a zed could become if you ditch hicas, aircon, egr, carbon canister, aivv cats... etc) the zed diet!

 

Has anyone ever had their Zed on a weighbridge to check the kerbweight after having junked this lot? If I could get mine below 1,400Kgs I'd be very happy:) I think Chunk only got his swb just below that though :(

what does it weigh standard? 1560kgs?
