had the car to a garage this morning to have a listen to her. i have posted a couple of threads about the noise on the car, its a rattle which comes on around 2500 - 3500 only when the engine is hot. i have had one guy say its the little ends and most people say it sounds like a noisy cam, but this morning the guy in the garage reckons it sounded like piston slap, now if you look back a few threads i explained that the car started to tick two weeks ago and i checked the engine oil and noticed it was way low, it took nearly two litres of oil to bring her right up to level. now i only bought the car 2 weeks before this and was on holiday for one of those weeks so didnt excpect the oil to drop so quickly ,the ticking went imediatly and after a couple of days i noticed this rattle when getting hot it has got very slightly louder, and as stated sounds like the top end. i will record it with my phone and stick it on one of the sights for you all to listen too, i reckon the big ends are failing, but surely if they were gonna go they would have gone big style by now as i have been driving her every day since this hapened and as i have said its not really a loud rattle. i was told from ztech that the cars dont have a small end bearing so the chances of piston slap in my opinion sound slim, but surely if there has been oil starvation to and around the gudgion pin and piston then there could of been some ware which would be more prominent when hot and surely this would only rattle on over run as the piston became free from compression. i reckon i am doomed, hope the vvt springs i ordered quieten her down

aint it something that happens in a pub fight pistupslap?

nah its when the piston/s move slightly in the bore and "slap" it therefore making a nasty little noise. usually associated with small 2-strokes but any engine can suffer from it with wear.

HTH.

si.

all piston engines have a small end bearing! its the smaller (piston) end of the con rod, usually a lighter rapid rattling noise when revving the engine when worn.

piston slap is when the pistons/bores have worn & there is too much clearance, more noisy from cold when there is even more clearance.

well just had her to reg vardys and spoke to a coupl of the guys in the workshop, both of them said straight away that it was camshaft noise as it only runs half the speed of the engine revs were if it was bottom or top end it would be much faster, he also told me just to enjoy drivin her and not get to stressed over the noise as it wasnt terminal...phhheeeeww. well i hope he was right

Stop panicing and change the ****ing VVT springs  :D ;)

they are on order mate just waitong for them to come

Good good - given you a quick run down on what to do on the other thread ;)

;) yes i reckon they should sort the job out

gonna have to get her to a meet, any comin up in the north

There's mascrat manor, second monday of every month, but thats near manchester, quite a treck for you...

if i sortthis noise out i will be there, is it a good meet

biggest thing with zeds i would say is take the car to someone that really knows how the cars work /are put togeather! If you take the car to someone that doesnt know it you can end up swapping lots of random parts to solve something simple and common! This is also why so many different garages are telling you different things!

Zed engines are pretty robust and guys are running them at over 140,000 miles without rebuilds so i would be suprised if you have enough wear for piston slap!
