Air intake question

I have had an HKS induction kit on my Zed for a while now and wonder how you guys rate these. I did read in the tech section a while back about them being troublesome if driving in very rainy condition, making the MAS sensor play up or something. A month or so ago I was doing some motorway driving in such conditions and the car started running like shit. The sponge like filter was drenched. Is this something other intakes suffer from?.

What other one do you recommend and what prices (such as Blitz etc )?

BTW My HKS filter is now quite grubby, can you clean these things and how?

Not sure if this helps, but I used to have K&N air filters on one of my motorbikes. when it rained the two 'outer' filters would saturate with water making it difficult for the carb. to get air through. I used to put plastic bags on them when it rained to stop them from getting wet and took them off for the journey.

Simon I swear by the Blitz intake,it has been fitted now for 18 months and never has give an indication that it does not like the wet,However ask Tezza about his HKS filter like you said it is sponge and gets full of water,he is on his second filter and even worse his SECOND AIRFLOW METER ££££££££.

Uh Ohh!!. Thanks for the reply Ian. I can do without buying a new airlow meter at the moment. How much was your Blitz intake if you don't mind me asking M8?

Simon, HKS filters are impregnated with a sticky fluid and as far as I know can't be cleaned and reused. The packging the replacement filters come in look like HKS recommend replacement every 3,000~5,000Km (or 3~6 months). I change mine every six months.

£150 from Gingerspice wink.gifSerious though ask Tezza about his problems with his HKS sponge.

I'm using the one from SE. Never had a problem with damp, rain etc.

Me too, but I do notice that the filter gets damp when it rains because water drips around the edges of the centre panel. Hasn't caused any probs though.

The best advantage with the Blitz filter is that it will last far longer than the other two mentioned, paper and sponge are no match for SS biggrin.gif

you can clean the filter with either a solvent (meths) or an engine degreasant (gunk).

then go to you nearest motorbike shop (preferably on that deals in motorcross gear) and buy the filter oil.

then put your clean filter in a plastic bag( make sure there is no holes in it ) and pour a little oil in to the bag. scrunch the bag up so that the filter absorbes the oil. make sure you do not saturate the filter though, not good for the ait flow meeter!

hope this helps

should any of you want to now change to a blitz filter i'll buy ure old knackered hks one

Kris, this is the HKS blurb on the filters -

"High Flow polyurethane type filter: Wet type element which incorporates a special sticky fluid chemical (not an oil). To enhance filtration, a special laminating process is used to ensure that this chemical bonds to the element allowing each filter to achieve maximum filtration. As a result, an element with large pores is utilized for greater airflow without sacrificing filtration. HKS filter elements are disposible to maintain consistency in performance"

Will oiling a cleaned HKS filter work as well?

I had this problem once or twice with my blitz SUS filter.

Car would suddenly splutter then recover. Figured it was down to drops of water coming in the end of the filter and hitting the MAF, so cooling the wire down and giving the ECU the wrong signal (presume it's a hot wire MAF).

Only did it in the pissing (Scottish) rain, and it hasn't happened since I put a bit of masking tape over the mesh in the end of the filter.

My Blitz SUS has been great, covered some miles with it since it was fitted. wink.gif

Andrew, according to HKS you cannot wash and re-oil their filter. Whether this is complete bullshit or not I'm not sure, but reading the info its possible I suppose.

The question to ask is - is it worth not replacing the element??? Remember the next part the air comes to in your engine is the turbo compressor blades - do you really want any grit at all in there? On my turbos there is evidence of compressor blade damage caused by badly filtered air - the filter was clogged when I bought it!!! Just a thought....

CheerZ,

Andy

Thanks for all the replies and info guys. It would seem it's replacement filter or new intake time now.

I never had a problem when I did this with the HKS on my GT4. the stuff to use is not a oil it is the proper stuff(motor cross boys use it)

I suppose it makes a difference if you have a gaping spoiler or headlight panel.

Errr i hope you didn't all remove the stock splash guards when you installed the Aftermarket Air filters - and if you did remove them you replaced them with a aftermarket one.

Else you are beggin to hydrolock the engine !! remmeber peeps it rains 13months of the year over here FFS ! frown.gif

Chances are that if the HKS one is a fabric or cotton gauze then that is why it is gettin saturated ! - Most Blitz SUS ones that people on here have are a steal mesh therefore and not prone to saturation with liquid - however that does not mean they dont get wet and suck water into the engine !!! It just means they dont retain it for as long which reduces the risk to the MAS - You can also get a Blitz Cotton gauze i believe for about 90 quid if you so do desire for some odd reason.

All brings up the old filtration Vs Flow rate debate i guess - But the concensous is that the Steal Mesh type like the Blitz SUS ones maintain a good enuff filtration to not pose any problems to the engine !

Simon,

I have HKS Induction on my car, and whats more I came onto the forum and asked if it was wise to clean it - was told:

Clean with engine degreasant and rinse with water, now I am not saying this was bad advice (I really dont know if it was or not) but I would like to know one way or another as this is what I did.

I live up a dusty lane and need filtration smile.gif!!

On the other hand as an induction kit I love it, give a lovely low grunt and looks like a fooking aliens head LMAO!!

BTW Si, got the headlights sorted and can see for miles down the byways and slighways of the old woight... but am now paranoid about splashgaurds / filters / dust & grit and turbo blades you bugger !! smile.gif wink.gif

Kind regardz m8,

Glen

Thanks for that info Nico, but I am panicing a bit now!!. Sorry to be a bit thick here but what part do you class as the stock spalsh back guard (I did not install the HKS filter). I still have the old air box so will re-install it if that is part of the guard.

I would like to see how much you lights have improved Glen. Sounds like it has made a world of difference M8!!.

What to do about this HKF filter. Can we take a vote guys...can you clean it or not????
