What "um-derrrrrrrr!" moments have you had with your Z, or any other car?

Tell your story.

I have 2, one Z related one not.

After the first rebuild, we (my dad and I) start up the engine for the first time, and it started in 1 second. Yay! We where so proud, and we left it ticking over. After about 3 mins, it was stuggling, and it got worse and worse until it died. Thinking it had melted, we checked everything for over a hour but we didnt know why it was not not even turning over.

We asked a mechanic neighbour to come and help and we told him what happened.

"Right" he thought for 10 seconds. "Have you connected the alternator?"

It was then the penny dropped.

Also when I was about 2 or 3, my dad fixed a car of a neighbour, and also painted it a nice mint green. (This was the early eighties and and the green was the original colour) While waiting for the first coat to drie he decided to paint the wheels silver. Alloys where a not common those days so cleaning your wheels and painting them make the car look nice. Being so small I was in awe of my dad and wanted to help. While having a rest I appeared from around the other side of the car with a paint brush dripping with silver paint and told him "I finished painting the car"

In a panic my dad went to the other side of the car to see that I had painted virtuall half the car in silver paint. he had to strip it all off and start again. He wasnt happy.

LOL - reminded me of the first day I got a MR2 T-bar. Took my sister out for a spin after demonstrating the removable T-tops. Put my foot down to scare the bejesus out of her and my driver's side panel flew off, crunched on the wing and smashed on the road :(

I'd forgotten to fasten the panel :slap: My sister still reminds me about this

Drove around with a bin liner on for a couple of days till I could get a new one from my Toyota dealer. Did I look cool in my new motor?

Steve :)

I did this in the Z!!....Had it 2 months and decided on a full valet one Sunday afternoon ensuring i cleaned all the door and Targa seals :x:

On the way to work Monday morning and i get up to about 80 on the dual carraigeway and i can hear wind noise..... Thinking it must be the window seal i dropped the passenger window slightly to re-seal it :x: .........Passenger Targa starts flapping, and as i hit the brakes and attempt to reach across and grab it, it gets sucked out like a shotgun going off!! ......up in the air, bounced on the opposite carraigeway and vapourised.... :headvswal

managed to retrive the metal after a long walk back and am still amazed to this day how it went accross the carraigeway, rather than following traffic, and that nothing was travelling in the opposite direction to clout it either otherwise it would have been nasty as well as costly :x:

I still check the Targa latches before pulling off to this day!!

I was driving to work in my old laguna and a boy racer pushed past in a pug 205 gti at about 90mph. I was thinking, mmm need a fast car, might get one of those. Then i thought some more, nar they are old and will probably fall appart. Just as that thought went through my head the big sunroof they have ripped off and came spinning towards me! I swerved and it exploded in the lane next to me. I had my window down and loads of bits of glass came in the car, couple of cuts on my arm. not happy!

once drove an ellegro and thought i was cool, what a twat

I'd have never owned up to that. Was it a 950 1100 or a 1500

Buy the thing in the first place, spend every last penny keeping it in good nick.

Then realise a couple of years down the line that it all needs paying back. ;)

hi guys, first post on here. i was trying to find the best auto gearbox oil an this thread turned up in the search. no idea why!!

anyway most stupid thing i have done with a zed (so far!!!). i am a new owner never had one of these before. the one i have started overheating so trawled through this site to see if there were any fixes found loads. decided to flush the system.

i liked that one where you leave the garden hose running through your inlet pipe. but of course idiot that i am i had the rad out. spent the next 2 hours cleaning my engine bay of automatic transmission fluid.

I was manouvering a brand new 911 around the car park at work. Forgetting the auto's pedal box was offset I put into reverse and applied the brakes but I kept going quicker backwards to a customers TVR tuscan. I could feel the ABS cutting in but still smacked the Tuscan. £2000 to the Tuscan (new front end) and Not even a scratch on the 911.

Boss weren't happy.
