Well said. He seemed to be a very open, honest and caring guy that, despite the bad press, cared so much for his family, friends and his work. He'll be sadly missed :(

this boy lived life to the full and invited the rest of us into his life for our pleasure partly for money but mostly for the sheer love of the reptile world. the guy did,nt deserve to die that way so please leave your smart ass comments for another time :nono:

I have been to his zoo which was given to him by his dad as an almost lost cause, he made money for the zoo and the animals.

 

There is an almost constant expansion of the zoo going on so they can take in animals from all over that are in need of a home, so to say he did what he did for money is a bit unfair cos he plouged it back into the zoo.

 

I missed him by one day, he was there on the tuesday and we were there wednesday, but when he is there he always did his part in educating the punters and putting a show on with Monty the croc he caught with his dad when he was a boy.

 

He dedicated his life to the animals, even to the point of trying to get people to stop killing cane toads, and will be missed by alot of people.

God bless you Steve, you were a breath of fresh air in the wildlife documentary scene. You transformed the animal doco and thrilled and educated the masses. A guru of the reptile kingdom, avid showman and entertainer. Your talents will be greatly missed and so will you be by your wonderful family.

Yeah Rest in peace Steve. Remember that a lot of people die doing dangerous things they love. Think Ayrton Senna. No one deserves to die doing what they love and entertaining others.

some of these comments are harsh. its like someone getting killed in a fast car and people saying well what do you expect he drove a car fast. he knew the risks. steve didnt do it for the money. he did it cos he loved animals

Actually he did.

He has said that under water is more dangerous than on the land. On the land he is agile, react quicker and get away when needed. Under water you cant really do that. we are not fast enough under water.

 

At first he annoyed the hell out of me, but then I watched a programme about his work, about what he actually did for Australia Zoo, and it changed my perception of him.

 

tragic loss for some one who actually made a difference in the world.

They have had a tribute to him every night on TV so far in Aussie. Its so sad that it happened like that. We all thought that he'd get eaten by a croc or something. Its a sad loss, but he will stay alive through his family n the zoo. RIP Steve.

Still cant decide whether the guy was a total nutcase or a complete genius.

I reckon he would have found that amusing myself. Anyone who insisted that the cameras kept rolling if he was being eaten by a croc or stabbed by Stingray must have a pretty awesome sense of humour IMO! Apparently it was his dieing wish that the moment gets shown on TV.

i read in the paper yesterday that his wife found out on the radio - there's never a good way to get news like this but that can't have been nice!

I would have stopped filming too, those waters are full of tiger sharks, a guy was killed near Batt reef when I was living there by a tiger shark.

 

My mate up there is a paramedic and he says they all feel so useless, he died too quickley for the chopper to get to him, its put a dark cloud over the whole service in far north Queensland.
