I have just noticed the air-conditioning on the Zed I bought two weeks ago is not working.

Any ideas on what is the most likely cause?

The rubber plug pulls off then you can get a small bit of wire to bridge the two pins out inside the plug.

Dont think it will go with only ignition on, try it though, but also with engine running. Turn on the AUTO and use the ECON button to turn AC on/off. You will see the clutch on the front spinning if its engaged.

Give that a go then let me know what happend.

Hi - I have managed to get to the wires but as I can't actually see, only feel, the wires I am having difficulty disconnecting the rubber plug you mention and I'm frightened of damaging it if I try too hard. Does the plug just pull out or does it twist first and then pull out. Also do I bridge the plug on the end of the two wires or do I bridge the socket it has just come out of?

Dave

EDIT ADDED - I have had another good look and my two wires go into a hard plastic 'plug' about 5cm long and 2cm diameter. This appears to be held on by a large nut which it seems will need to be loosened/removed before the plug will come off. It seems to be a slightly different setup to what you've experienced and I am reluctant to try and loosen this large nut without knowing what I am doing. I will not proceed any further until you, or someone, gives me more advice. Thanks for the help you are giving me.

Dave

if you look at the picture posted in the link a few posts up, you will see the reciever/dryer with the lead coming off of it, at the end should be a connector - this is the lead to the switch - i think the large nut you are reffering to is the actual sensor itself where it screws into the canister??

Dave

...the air con on my 95 NA - the one for sale - will be the same as yours. It all works, so if you want me to check things against what you have, to try and trace the fault, just let me know. 5 mins on a mobile phone might just do it.

Good luck

Hi Paul - I've looked again and think you're right, good job I didn't try to loosed the nut....goodness knows what might have happened.

I have tried and tried to remove the two lead connector from the end of the sensor but it is not rubber which should pull off reasonably easily, it seems to be a small plastic connector that is held in place by a 'tooth' that has to be depressed (like me) before the connector will come out. Because of the small size and the access difficulty (through the front bumper) my fingers just cannot depress the tooth and pull the connector at the same time.

I will have to find some way of succeeding and, when (if) I do succeed, I will come back and let you know if bridging the two leads identifies the problem or not. I am tempted to assume that my problem IS caused by low pressure and have it re-gassed but I am reluctant to pay the £90 to have it done only to find out it is some other cause altogether.

Please wish me luck. - Dave

Thanks so much, Jack - you guys on this site are really great :smash: . Until I can get these wretched leads off and check whether my problem IS low pressure or not I can't move forward. I will certainly come back to you if I don't find the cause soon, if you don't mind.

Dave

mine needs regassing but im told mine has too be converted because the gas mine uses is banned is that true or are they pulling my leg

Thanks mate nice one

I know this is an old thread but I thought I would round it off by saying that it WAS low gas that was causing my problem.

I have now had it re-gassed by Kwik-Fit for £44.95 and my aircon is now working 100%.

I want to thank all you guys who gave me advice last September.

Cheers - Dave

Cos some of us dont actually want such a power sapping unneccessary extra on our cars. :nono:

What do you think the "Econ" button is for? :headvswal LOL

With the Aircon off or in Economy mode it doesn't use any power and when you floor it the ECU switches off the aircon itself (Power light also comes on) so you get maximum power ;)

I can understand people removing it as it does weigh a lot but the only time you'd want to take the belt off is if the compressor has seized.

One of my neighbours is an air con engineer and he can re-gas cars with an R12 drop-in replacement (R49 maybe ?). Basically he'll do it for beer money if anyone is interested.
