Anyone else received a call from this number?

I checked on google and it appears to be cold calling from HSBC. Previously it was Three Mobile.

I have also rang number (have checked with BT and it is free to call) and it says you were called by HSBC Bank and there is no need to return the call.

Anyway having ignored initial calls until I had researched it, I finally answered them today. A female asked if I was me and then asked me to confirm my DoB, to which I replied no, and told her this was b******s, she told me to check with bank! I then told her I thought it was a scam and asked which department she was from, told me she could not disclose those details because of Data Protection. I again told her that was b******s and how could I check with bank if I didn't know which department was calling? I also queried how HSBC had my mobile number which I have never given them, she said a computer generated the number. I basically kept arguing with her, quite good fun and then I hung up.

so much dodgy stuff these days. Like the e-mails asking you for your pin details for whatever fake reason. I get these for all sorts of banks I have nothing to do with but the worst part is that the first one of those e-mails I ever got was claiming to be the bank I AM with. I got the the pin entry screen, typed in the details but then stopped and thought I better check it out. And obviously it turned out to be a scam and I was just a click away from being the 'scam-ee'.

These scams make me sick. Well done Yampiedog while you held her up with questions you keep her from scamming someone else's grandmother.

theres a trick to these people... when they ask 'is that martyn blah blah?' you reply, 'hold on il just get him for you'... at which point you put the phone on the table and leave it, youll be suprised how long some of them stay waiting lol ;)

LOL we've done just that in the past

well i do a similar thing for an insurance company (more than)

We have to confirm DPA as part of our rules and regulations but we can always say we are from such and such a place etc as it has nothing to do with data protection. Also she can tell you why she is ringng in the first place before you give out your personal details!!!

Said she needed to confirm it was me she was speaking to so i told her i wanted to confirm i was talking to the bank and asked for my sort code, DOB and the first, fourth and last number of my security code. Couldn`t give them so hung up!

exactly - although replace could with 'should'!

alot of telesales people simply dont understand the data protection act,and use it as an excuse when they are unable to give you an answer.

the act is there for the following -

to ensure that anyone processing personal data ensures that the data is-

fairly and lawfully processed

processed for limited purposes

adequate relevant and not excessive

accurate and up to date

not kept longer than necessary

processed in accordance with the individuals rights

secure

not transferred to countries outside the eu.

To say that they cannot disclose which department is calling is ludicrous. The department calling has no relevance to the customers sensitive data.

It is silly though to ask for them to confirm your password or something to prove who they are, of course they wont!

Reported number at local HSBC today only for them to check and it's a genuine number, there are two messages on my account stating I refused to confirm security details and hung up!

I did stress that the call centre staff need to understand DPA better.

I get fooked off with this every week. I just take the pee when they call.

Can anyone tell me why the sales callers can start to get through to you, about six months after you have registered with the preferential service?Nowadays,i take the pee like eveyone else!!

But how do they know it was you that refused and hung up. ;) Tell them to take it off your record and put on that they shouldn't call you and ask for personal details as you won't give them. :mac1:

These people don't seem to understand that THEY have called YOU, so they know who they are calling. You only have their word for it that they are who they say they are! Sadly they just don't seem to get it! :slap:

We've had no real problems since we registered with the TPS a good few years ago now. We get the odd automated call from the States and only a few cold calls.

I just ask them if they've heard of the Telephone Preference Service. Some just hang up immediately. Others say "No", so I tell them to look it up and make sure they don't call again.

The real pains are people like the RAC, who I was with last year thanks to a deal on here for around £90 (I think). The renewal came through at over £200 and they've sent several reminder letters and phoned a couple of times to make sure I haven't forgotten to renew. :headvswal It's not something the TPS deal with though as I have a "relationship" with them.

A few years ago I used to manage a telecan office and this is the lowdown on the TPS.

Every telecan company is supposed to be registered with them and should recieve an updated file of registered people, dependant on which sort of technology they use depends on weather this gets used or not. Unfortunately this isnt the law, they DONT have to register!! however if you tell a telecan company that you are registered then they should never ring you again....They can be fined up to £15000 if they do, only problem is that most 'fly by night' comanies use a false name when they ring or wont tell you properly who they are. So registering with the TPS doesnt give you much of anything realy. Thats the way it used to be, although some one one here may now tell me completely different!!
