At last, a good site to get info on my Z!

I recently upgraded the ECU on my TT and I am now looking at buying a straight through

exhaust from Silvia Engineering. Have you had

any good / bad experiences with these systems. Do they make much difference to the

performance? Are better options available?

Please help !!

Simon, welcome to another 300ZX owning Simon!

Universal opinion on straight through exhausts (i.e. removed cats) is... great if the turbo's seals are new. If they are as old as the car then the lack of back pressure will cause oil to blow past and smoke like a bugger! I went the safe option and went for an HKS Super Drager (2*4' Pipes) which are CAT back. After 30K+ hooligan miles I am not belchinf smoke so i would recommend cat back unless you are planning to replace the seals which is a bugger of a job. (Engine out!)

ahh the great debate goes on ,

i have HKS Super dragger and i guess it is up to you as to who you should choose.

cat's strangle the turbos so they flow better with less backpressure.

just more noise i guess

i personally would not use silvia but its up to you.

good luck

Thanks for the reply guys. Its nice to hear from someone who's had experience messin

with Z's, instead of some tit down the main dealers that only specialise in oil changes in Micra's!! ( well at my local dealer anyway ).

Is the HKS system better than the Mongoose?

I did not want to make the exhaust too loud.

Did you find the CAT back system made any

performance improvment? Let me know!

Cheers.

Welcome simon,

Have a look in the Tech Section on the Menu on the left, it has a quick points list about all the major exhaust and the + and - points.

Neither the Mongoose or the HKS are deafening, but they are both louder than stock .

the hks exhaust is a little louder than the mongoose but i think it is really nice sounding as it is very smooth

good luck with your choice

I have the full SE straight through exhaust(Cats removed), and it is definetly louder than stock, also the car definetly felt more responsive with the new exhaust, although it already had a japanese cat back system on it when I imported it. Also had to have the rear turbo seals replaced. Also depending on the age of your car affects whether you can remove cats and still get through the emmissions test.

Simon.

Give me a bell 01942-671239. I will give you the low-down on Performance exhausts for the Z32. All manufacturers in stock.

I dont know if to take a chance or not !

I currently have a veilside catback system and I was going to remove the cats and go straight through what is the risk of my turbo seals leaking? any ideas anyone or is this a "how longs a piece of string?"??

1990 TT 55000mls regularly serviced

I quite fancy the idea but ...

Thanks

I wouldn't bother with the SE system as I used to have one and the finish isn't great.

I would speak to Luke at the Z center. The quality of his system is good, it sounds great and it's cheaper.

Alternatively go with a Greddy system which sound quiter than stock but benefits from good air flow. This is available as a cat back systen though.

The HKS system only has one tail pipe which some don't prefer!

Steve

paulr,

If your turbo seals are leaking oil then keeping the cats in place is only hiding the problem.

I would guess than a Z with 55k miles and regular servicing should be okay.

I have removed the cats on my Z with 46k miles and run 14-18psi boost without any signs of rear seal problems.

Go for it!!

Steve

am i correct in saying that the jap import z's dont have the precats like they do in america so only one set of cats (just want to clear this up for myself)

Mines a jap and it doesn't have precats, but I'm not sure if the precat came in from a certain year.

Think you are probably right I have put removing the cats top of my "to do" list

I will be ringing you during the week Johnny

picking your brains thanks.
