recently noticed a noise coming from the rad fan area at the front...

starts at 2k revs and goes to maybe 4k revs.. its like a bellow, and actually sounds like i have a v12 8ltr monster engine in the car, which of course i dont...

its deffo engine speed related, just not sure if i can stop the fan in any way (a simple one) so i can say its definitely that... if it needs sorting then i'll sort it, i just need to be sure..

also i'm a bit concerned that this may harm the car, altho its unlikely and at the RR i just went to it performed very well, so probably wont have an impact on performance..

any help welcome..

Probably just your viscous fan unit doing it,s job , you do hear them working more in hot weather , which is as it should be   HTH

yeah i think it is the fan, but trust me its unusually noisy mate, is there any parts on it that can wear out or anything?

its got progressively louder and whereas before it could only be heard when the car first started now its all the time..

any more ideas?

You should always be able to hear the viscous fan working hard on startup for the first few seconds. If you don't, then generally, it's foobarred.

agreed Si, problem is this is ALL the time mate... even when at full running temp...

a mate had a look at it tonight and said that the fan should be free running when the engine is off, which mine isnt..

with it getting progressively worse over the last few weeks i think its probably ready to be replaced, i'll stick with standard tho i think,..

does anyone know where i can get one from and roughly the going rate??

Tony

Shouldn't be free turning, should offer some resistance. Anyway if its running at high speed all the time the clutch is buggered, you need a new one.

Oh and theres no such thing as an upgrade to an electric fan, thats always a downgrade imo.

New, they are about £250 or something silly like that. Try AndyZ. He does them for about £35 iirc.

cheers Si, will do mate...

p.s. agree with the downgrade clarkey

what was the result of this, think ive encountered the same problem,,,loud wooshing type noise when you accelerate,,,was it the fan clutch?

viscous clutch is prob buggard, what about the ecu temp sensor is it connected? when they have a bad connection the fan sticks on.

viscous fan is only mechanical / temperature operated, not by any electrical ecu signal. Other possible cause of unusual noise is cracked blades.

ah yeah im thinking of the aircon fan sorry.
