I recently got my 1st 300 and it looks like i was done as I have just found out the head gasket has blown on it. It's a 1990 J spec 300zx TT auto.

I am seriously gutted!

Does anyone know roughly how much i should be paying for the labour to do it? also where would be best to get the parts and which gaskets and stuff would be best?

Is there anything i should know , do's or don'ts on doing the job??

Are all the parts i will need the same on a J spec as the UK cars?

Any help anyone can offer would be great as this is something i know nothing about and i want to make sure it is all done right and i don't want to be ripped off.

Would it be better, cheaper to get another engine?

I know nothing on the subject, please help.

Thanks in advance.

Pete

Thought i better give you all the syptoms.

The oil seems fine no milkyness at all, loosing water but there does not seem to be any oil or anything in there. Brown crap in rad and header tank.

Had block test done, fluid turned green.

Head gasket must have gone???

No other explanation is there?

Help!!! Please Lol

Brown crap...could just mean your coolant has just been neglected...like many a Zed. It would be mayo in colour if water had gotten in there.

What's this block test? Not heard of that one.

BTW, it's engine out job to change the head gaskets on a TT.

block test is what i know it as, fluid in tube on to of rad cap, run the engine, if it goes green or yellow means the gasket has gone. I think something to do with exhaust gasses.

That did'nt come out right.

It's a tube with a rubber bottom and you put it in the top of the rad where the cap goes, it has a blue liquid in it, you run the engine and if the fluid goes green or yellow your stuffed, blown head gasket.

Your rad water is brown though. Enough to change the colour of a liquid. I'd try a coolant flush first.

If you've got gasses leaking into the coolant, then a compression test will show if anythings leaking.

...infact, that doesn't even make sence. You'd get water getting into the combustion chamber, not the other way round.

I understood that as long as you get no water in with the liquid and it changes it's definatly the head gasket.

Have i been misinformed?

The water has been changed and a new rad cap, within 10 miles the rad cap was covered in brown shite. The water is pretty clean but the rad is brown inside. Shes loosing water.

Hi mate.if its had a chemical test and the liquid went green then you have combustion gases getting into your coolant.it would seem your headgaskets are blown.not all headgasket failures give you milky oil or oil in the water.sometimes the gaskets lift due to overheating allowing exhaust gas to enter the cooling system.make sure the heads are pressure tested before there skimmed.

Thanks jimmer, this is stressing me out, i know a good mechanic but he has never worked on a zed, he says it's not easy but he can do it, he's telling me about £1200 labour, is this a bit steep??????

Anything i need to tell him that he would.nt know unless he'd done a zed before??

Cheers dude i'll bare that in mind, how much do you want for it??

Sounds about right. Charge for removal and refit is about £500 for the engine. Then you have to have a new headset, timing kit including rollers/water pump etc, heads need skimming and pressure testing. That lot will cost you over £500?

BTW, I've just had my engine fully rebuilt by AtoZs in Bristol (Yami and Jimmer on here). It's been 101% since I got it back. Can't recommend them highly enough. 07721325660

I'm going to give yami a call on monday, don't like to ring on a sunday.

Anyone else had any work done by AtoZs??????

I'll give them a call tomorrow, think i need to be doing some more private work to pay for this lot lol, i hate fitting bathrooms but my zed is worth it! Better not tell my missus she'll string me up if i spend anymore on my cars.

Cheers Dude, I'd like his number if someone has it.
