I am trying to install a program onto a Windows 98 laptop but I cant copy it into 'My documents'. All the files apart from one will copy, its called 'owl252.dll, I have the software working on a laptop with Windows 98 to which it saved and works no problem. The software in question is from the nineties and only requires to be copied to C-drive and a creating a shortcut from one of the copied file, real old software.

Anyone have any ideas why I cant copy the software, I get a message ("Cannot copy Owl252.dll. The system cannot read from the specified device").

The software is installed from a floppy.Feckin computers again ffs. :headvswal

Try starting in Safe mode and then try the copy again. Sounds like the .DLL is in use by the system

Floppy disc, now that is retro! You could try copying from msdos, i think its F8 (testing my memory now of legacy operating systems) during the start up as it says "starting windows 98" to bring up the boot menu

Then select boot to ms dos, from that c:\ prompt make a new folder in your root dir of c: called temp (or something similar)

Then type copy a:\*.* c:\temp\*.*

Should copy everything and avoid the use of windows.

(the temp directory just ssave you having to type the long directory path to my documents using all the ~~~~~)

Geeky i'll give that a try later, I am fine with windows but ms is another story. As I said its real old software but I use it every day.

Bantam I never thought of that, it is the last file on the floppy, i'll have a look at that later as well.

Just a thought Geeky, if the software installs in ms dos mode, would i need to run it in that mode as well as usually it starts from a file thats saved in my documents or does itrun through windows.

Why are you trying to install a program in to your "My Documents" directory?

Try installing it to another directory.

Also try copying just that file on another computer. it is possible the disc is broken on the sector the file is held.

Stuart, I am not installing the program in my documents, the software is saved from floppy on pc (my documents) then I create a file and move it to my c-drive. Within the saved files I open the software then create a shortcut and it runs (usually) fine from there.

Billy I cant download that file mate.
