Spot the sarcasm there... :rolleyes: Anyway, failed my MOT today with the following items;

 

1. Offside (outer sill) seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded

2. Offside rear (sill back x2) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

3. Nearside (sill back) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

4. Offside front (sill back) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

5. Offside rear (inner wing x2) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

6. Nearside rear (inner wing) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

7. Offside rear brake pipe excessively corroded

8. Rear brake pipe excessively corroded

9. Nearside front (to rear) brake pipe excessively corroded

10. Service brake efficiency 45% - below threshold

 

I bought some rear sill return repair bits from Mike@MJP a couple of years ago (thanks Mike). These were fitted, and supposedly the brake pipes were sorted out as well (very similar fails 2 years ago) so I'm going to have to get it repaired. Few questions;

 

1. If the repair panels have already been put on, is it OK to put more on ?

 

2. I know it's hard to say without seeing the damage, but does anyone have any idea how much work this could be ? (hours or cost, roughly)

 

3. Is it safe/acceptable to have the brake pipes re-routed so that the rear sub-frame doesn't have to be dropped ?

 

 

Obviously I'm also somewhat miffed that the £400 I paid to have the work done 2 years ago apparently hasn't been done, but there's sod all I can do about that as he's retired since. :headvswal

 

If anyone's got the time to help out with any suggestions or anything it would be much appreciated ! On a very tight budget at the moment so if this is going to cost a fortune it's going to have to be SORN. Going for a quote tomorrow morning, so wanted to get a rough idea of what I might be looking at !

Thanks - bit too much work for me though. I have a small gravel drive to work on !

The sills are FOUR layers of metal. When you had the OUTER cover sill repaired that still left three other metal layers of original car left. It now sounds like a lot of this has corroded and more besides.

As you say its impossoble to tell without seeing the car but IMO that list of corrosion (and its quite specific) will mean many many hours of painstaking fabrication of parts the Mike doesnt sell and probably cant be bought from Nissan either.

I have done similar work on an earlier Zed. Its tedious and if you cant weld n fabricete yourself you will have a huge bill on your hands.

Im plucking figures outta da air a bit but £400 per side PlUS the other brake work????

Also IMHO re routing brake pipes below the subframe is not a good idea as they may well be exposed to damage etc and fail again. The subframe may well have to be dropped anyway to make proper repair to the shell mounting points??

Anyone else got an opinion. Im only an amateur "bodger" not a pro!!!

Thanks for your advice - was having thoughts along the same lines myself. I'm kind of hoping that I will be fortunate with pricing; I've found a welding shop in York that has a great reputation for doing this kind of work at a good price and I'm going to see him again tomorrow. He had half a bus on the shop floor next to a couple of sports cars and a volvo when I went last time so I'm thinking he's at least trustworthy. Here's hoping...

That is not a tiny bit of rust, they all seem like critical points,won't be cheap, I would consider stripping the good bits and get another Z. Don't want to upset / offend you, just my honest opinion. (NB - Not qualified in anyway to MOT or evaluate cars!)

Hehe, yep. I'm going to get a special plastic bag to put the car in when it rains or whenever there's more than 30% relative humidity I think.

LOL, I just don't ever take mine out when it's wet. It's JDM, so probably doesn't matter, but hate the idea of taking it out in the rain.

 

Take some photos of your Z....sounds quite rusty!!!

So i'm not the only one out there with the "Nearside rear suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded" problem

I got the guy to show me when it was on the lift, there are several finger-sized holes all over the multiple "excessively corroded" areas. I'll put some photos up this weekend.
