knocking

The big ends went in my car so decided to replace the engine. but after running it with the big ends gone it developed another fault. the engine stalled and when i restarted it, it was knocking terrible and had no power at all. could not get over 30mph. it is knocking from the top. it sounds like it is just under the plenum on the left in the middle. any idea what this could be

    bent valves or piston hitting the valves/cylinderhead

    it sounds like the piston is tapping the cylinder head if that is possible. doesnt matter anyway as im just scrapping the engine
