I'm getting itchy feet and fancy a new challenge. After coming back from the States I'm possibly going to apply for some jobs over in New Zealand.

Just wondering if anyone has ever worked out there. Because it's part of the commonwealth, obtaining work visas shouldn't, in theory, be a major issue.

I understand that there are always quite a range of jobs over in NZ and that skilled professionals are in short supply, although my chosen field of work is obviously a little restrictive, I'll give it a go anyway.

My mate 'Chopper' and his wife are going there soon.

It wasn't easy to get the work visas and he's a school teacher which is a job they're short of apparently.

One form they had to complete cost £1K I think.

Chopper? LOL

Mmmm, interesting. From what I've read there are assistance packages to go with it. Work Visas are required if you actually have a job to go to which is why just getting an open entry one is difficult...or impossible! LOL

Anyway, when he gets there I'll let you know what he thinks if you're still looking into it. I think he's selling his house now and will be off in a few months.

I've lived and worked in NZ, I was working a ski lift operator in Queenstown, getting the 12 month working visa was a piece of cake as I already had the job lined up before I left. Although I don't think it is a big issue if you don't have a job lined up as long as you are only after the 12 month visa.

Try contacting the embassy for more information about applying.

Cheers Mike. Maybe I'd like to go out there for long. But a 1 year Visa might be good enough for the time being.

I actually have 2 years of a US Visa than needs utilising.

how old are you si?

the working holiday visa for nz lasts for 2 years and pretty much anyone under 30 without a shady criminal past can get one without too many problems. and its good for fiji and the cook islands too, apparently

Ste, I'm 27 and have a completely clean history. So that shouldn't be a problem I guess.

then you shouldn't have a problem.

i got the one for australia which is almost the same apart from only valid for a year. assuming they work the same, the only restriction you get is that you are only supposed to have one particular job for 3 months then move on to another. the idea is that you work to fund an extended holiday, not find a job settle down and stay.

saying that, quite a few people do end up staying longer cos if you find yourself in a job you like and they want to keep you they can aggree to sponsor you and after a few years you can get dual citizenship.
