i know this has probably been done to death, but was looking at some old mags earlier and noticed that compared with the more obvious "supercars" of its day the z32 stands up pretty well.

for instance look at these stats:

Lamborghini Diablo 0-60 4.3secs

Lamborghini Countach 0-60 4.9secs

Lotus Esprit turbo 0-60 4.9 secs

Honda NSX 0-60 5.2 secs

Porsche 911turbo 0-60 5.3secs

Nissan 300ZX TT 0-60 5.5secs

Ferrari 308 GTS 0-60 5.5secs

Ferrari 348 tb 0-60 5.6secs

Ferrari testarossa 0-60 5.7secs

Porsche 944turbo 0-60 5.7secs

be interesting how many secs it is off the modern day versions of the above cars.

im not sure myself if it could be classed as a "supercar" becuase of the price tag, maybe if Nissan had put an extra £50k on top of the £35k than it would have been.

but it performs like a "supercar" and looks like a "supercar" so 2 out of 3 aint bad, so for now i think il say its a definate supercar of the 90s at least.

what you reckon.

cheers

Si

Id say my luvly zed is a supercar. Its built from the ground up using little sharing components from other cars (Lotus Esprit = British Leyland tat remember). The zeds suspension and layout is very deserving of the supercar tag.

yes in the 90s it would have been

what about the Skyline GTR that was classed as a modern day "supercar" but that carries a Nissan badge.

well it shouldnt carry the super car badge imho

its all about name that make a supercar ferarri, lamborghini, maclaren, lada. the 300 having nissan on the front is why its not a supercar and its not that fast :x:

If you drive a car that in every way can out perform a "supercar" then surely that car is also a "supercar"? If not then what is it?

Isn't that the whole point though? The zed DOESN't outperform a supercar in every way. It goes 0-60 in a straight line almost as fast. It doesn't handle the same , and it doesn't give the same driving experience in many more ways than I understand. Maybe the problem is the term 'supercar' which is b*llocks really? I personally would call a new ferrari, porsche, lambo, etc a supercar ie close to 100k but others say cars of much less value are supercars. A zed would p*ss all over just about any older supercar but thats pretty pointless to me.

The Zed has to be the best value performance car around, and was better than most of its contempories at release date but it is what it is - a very high performance ROAD car. My Rx7 eats the zed for breakfast in terms of performance and handling but I'd rather have the Zed for a long journey any day. A 1990-95 porsche 911 is a much better track car than the Zed, I'd say that the Zed is an as good as or better road car though but I've not got the experience to judge.

edit - sure I had a point to make there but got lost in my ramblings! I think we should appreciate the cars for what they are :) I'd like to buy a caterham next as it'll go round a track faster than anything else :), wouldn't drive it across the country though.

Any hooo don't care what books or peeps say I love me Zed it's just super :)

here here!!! who cares exactly we cant all afford the big italian daddies and the Z is a bloody good alternative

here here!!! who cares exactly we cant all afford the big italian daddies and the Z is a bloody good alternative

Actually, I'm saving for a Ferrari 328. :x:

(as well as the zed of course)

i said we cant all not WE ALL CANT lol!!!

how old are you? do you have a son lol!!!!

so suposeing Ferrari made the Z everything the same, same styling, same 3l V6 twin turbo but it had a pranceing horse on the front and said Ferrari on the engine, would it then be a real supercar.

Althought you stick the mr2 355 body conversion on it's not the same thing so i think it's the experience that makes a supercar what it is.

With ferraris its the engine and exhaust note. No other car sounds like that.... apart from the maserati quattroporte, they howl!

Well when its time to walk the walk i bet most poncy supercar owners cop out from a challenge to race a zed. For some odd reason everytime i overtake a Volvo S80 barge they race me.

I agree with the 'who cares?' people...

... but I have to say that I don't think that the whole 'supercar' thing is all about performance and handling (both of which are stunning on the Zed anyway), it's also about how the car looks.

I don't know about you guys, but I get a lot of looks when I'm driving about in my Zed - and, a lot of people will stop and say, 'Wow - what is that?!'. They'd know what a Ferrari or a Porsche looked liked - they're just so passe....

And for the money, they're ridiculous. Supercar all the way for me.

And just to re-iterate that point, I got back to my car the other day and a bloke in his 40s (probably) had pulled up in a brand new XK8 that looked stunning. He was standing there staring at my car. I went to get in it and he said, 'Is that yours mate?'. I said, 'Yeah, always wanted one of these, and now I have!'. Then he said, 'Well, it's a stunning car mate'. 'Thanks, but I have to say your Jag looks pretty nice too!'. Then, he finished off with....

'Yeah, but that's a supercar'

:)

Probably for the same reason I wont race novas and the like...they know they will probably win.

Supercar or not,all I know is if I pull up next to a Porche,he looks at me,not the other way round!!-good enough in my book!

Its all time relative. Todays Supercars and very different to the "supercars" of the 70's,80's, early 90's......etc

It has the performance and looks of a supercar, but the reliablity, build quality and costs of a mass produced "sports car".

Supercars are super expensive, super unreliable and super horrid to drive!

Its not a supercar, thankfully!...the media invented term "supercar" are cars at the extreme end of the market....not cars you can drive everyday. The zed is a sports car with supercar performance (for its time)...a "Super sports".

i class it as a classic supercar

the looks and power are what does it for me

still puts a grin on my face when i come home from work and see it on my drive and thats after 2 years of ownership :))

if you stick a 355 kit on an MR2 its still an MR2! my point was if Ferrari built the 300zx and it had a Ferrari badge on it would it then be a REAL super car, basicaly what im saying is that the 300zx is not a supercar but only becuase of the badge and mostly becuase of the price tag.

by the way this thread was based on the zed been a 90s supercar not modern day, i doubt it would do much up against a koenigzegg or a Ferrari Enzo.... y know what im sayin.

i fully agree and i fully think your right Si if ferarri had made the Z inthe 90s they would have been a supercar

sorry but a Z cant be put in the same category as a Ferrari or a Lambo etc, they only similarities the three share are that they are cars. Ferarri etc have built up a reputation and desirability, performance wise Zeds are spot on but the do not carry the Kudos of the other two and in all honesty do not have the same wow factor. its all about labelling and branding at the end of the day, Nissans are mass produced. Supercars are not made for the public but for the elite few that can afford them and such is reflected in the styling and desirability

Oh my god .. and your are blond?

well done you ...

Seriously that is quite a good point ... :)

Yes im blonde, bottle blond pleased to meet you!!

I'd call it a 90s supercar, not in the same league as todays supercars but it was back then. It was japans offering to the entry level supercar market along with the nsx, rx7 and gto etc. There is now a new car catagory according to top gear - the hypercar, includes the zondas, lambos, and that swedish thing, you cant compare them to a 911 gt3 but the gt3 is still a supercar right?

What was the fastest car in Gran turismo 1?

The tt gto!

Yes im blonde, bottle blond pleased to meet you!!

Pleased to meet you as well.

LOL .. It was really a very good point ... :)

Unfortunately people don't really understand branding and what it is all about ... you hit the nail on he head!!
