hi Rick,

welcome to the forum.

congrats on your purchase.

ecu (including the boost jets) would give you immediate noticeable difference, and would also mean that you are well covered for easy upgrade on all future mods

most of the first mods are easy to do, ecu, exhaust, intake, pulley, so take your pic really....

1st : Driver's performance school

2nd : Brakes

3rd : Tires

4th : ECU

5th : Exhaust

welcome to the most sarcastic forum on the planet lol

well the problem is twofold get the ecu done and your exhaust and intake will hold you back but get the exhaust and intake and you need an ecu done and then a pully and then larger injectors and then bigger turbos and then cam s and then and then .........#

you now need ot stop so bigger brakes and then do the suspension and then buy a mclaren f1 lol

the list is limitless

goos luck go with the ecu (biggest single difference initialy)

Intake and exhaust together will give an immediate increase in power and the most cost effective. However, the brakes are the 300zx weakest link, so upgrade the brakes, tyres then the suspension before you do the ECU,Injectors, Turbo's etc.

I would tend to agree with Henri on what is the correct path to follow.

Altho the ECU is a great great MOD it is designed to work with a POP filter and Exhaust, (This is kinda like what the Supra owners call the BPU expcept they do it a different way.) Stock Brakes will also be a liability with the ECU used to its full potential, They should be fine with the Exhaust and filter tho. I think it depends how saftey concious you are, but bare in mind in higher than stock form the Back end starts to become a little twitchy.

What no one has mentioned yet is CLUTCH. If you are lucky enuff to have a manual then you will need a new clutch at the same time as the ECU. the stock item will last somewhere between minutes and days with that sorta power.

The reason I haven't done the ECU on my import is insurance. There's not too much trouble with the exhaust and filter, but the insurance companies don't seem to like chipped imports.

If you don't plan to tell them then that's fine, but you may be surprised at how much your premium increases (assuming they'll insure you at all).

I pay £795 now and I think the best quote I got if I chipped it was £1800...

Yes Dave that's very honest of you.

A friend of mine fitted an ECU to his Black 90ZX and only told the insurance company about the exhaust. (I think you've been in the car Dave to know the difference!)

I however very much frown on this and would not condone it at all!!!

Erhem....... I'll get me coat! Simon

well lets not get his hopes dashed.

do the ecu but really consider doing the brakes as even i drive like a wuss (as craig can contest he has seen my video of the nurburgring) and in the streets around london my brakes just dont do the trick.

i went for the basic upgrade g-force cross drillled and grooved and around the nurburgring in 6 laps they never faded (just warped lol)

clutch is a must upgrade if you do the ecu , but i guess with exhaust and intake you wont need clutch imediatly.

to be honest, my brakes are fine with Porterfield pads being the only upgrade.

if i stomp on them, they stop me.

I chuck my car around, late brake, brake on bends, generally rely on the faith i have in my car, around london roads (as Warren can confirm ;) and they seem fine to me.

Sure, i would like bigger brakes, better stopping power, but they are fine for me most of the time.

On the track, where it is flat out to full stop etc on the bends, then they would be useless, but on the road, they are not as bad as some of you seem to imply. IMHO.
