I've got a 91 300ZX TT Import, and can't understand whats the big deal with insuring one of these compared to insuring a non imported 300 of the same spec.

Rang around for a few insurance quotes, as soon as you mention it's an import the price goes sky high. Decided to go for one of these low mileage classic policies as everything else quoted is too unreasonable.

What's everyones thoughts on this?

Should the Imported 300's be viewed with such detest by insurers?? And does anyone know why.

The Jap cars are supposed to undergo a more stringent MOT test then ours, so whats the big deal.

I didn't really realise there was such a difference in the price for insurance until i bought my Z. Bit late know, but its a great car and I'll have to live with the expense.

go for the classic insurance one i know of a few uk spec ones who do the same thing

Any insurer that looks down on my Z gets his @ss kicked!!!

Try Privelege insurance. They specialise in import insurance.

What companies offer classic insurance for the Z32? I cant find any that will!

Please don't go with privelegde! I insured my imported Z with them last year, making sure on numerous occasions that they knew I was driving an import. I even wrote to them as I was worried that they didn't really know what they were talking about.

When my renewal came up they suddenly say 'Ooohh, we don't insure imports, your insurance has been invalid for the past year'. I was ferkin' fuming but couldn't get my money back as this could go down as having 'insurance refused' and they started backtracking saying that they would have paid out. Bollox!

I went with AXA, who specialise in imports and know what they're talking about. They were cheaper as well (you need an immobiliser fitted though).

Cheers,

Andy.

barbel,

That's an interesting comment about Privelege.

I have two import vehicles insured with them, one of which is an import only car. (ie never sold outside of Japan)

I shall however make some investigations with privelege about my policies.

Steve

I am also with priviledge ,I told them that I had an import which was not yet registered so they insured it on the chassis number ! but I think I will call them just to check anyway (better safe then sorry)

Paulr

Ok here's what Privelege have told me.

My insurance cover is for import vehicles.

There were previously import specialist insurers but since they merged with Direct Line, it will no longer be their main aim at the market.

Existing insurance policys for import cars will run as normal until expiry. They will still insure import cars in future but premiums may be slightly higher.

Does there seem to be some contradiction in what Privelege are telling people??

I saw an ad for a new car insurance company on the London Underground. You can find it at:

www.elephant.co.uk

They appear to do imports and they give quotes over the net - rather than say you'll have to phone as the car is "special".

I just tried a quote and they were VERY competitive for me and my 300ZX (but bloody awful for a Porsche 911).

Give 'em a try.

Andy

if its any help i took out a traders policy that covers imports for £650.

Rick,

I'm interested, can you email me the details.

Thanks

Steve

There certainly seems to be some contradiction in what Privelege are telling people. They insured my 2 seater NA Z on the chassis number when I first bought it which was great. They were adamant when I wanted to renew that they weren't interested. Maybe 'cos it's an NA?

AXA were 100 quid less at 550 anyway so Privelege can do one.

Andy

Guys,

1st of all thanks for making me welcome, cheers.

Re the insurance, I of course had the same prob with my import, but after ringing a few companies I think I got quite a good deal with NFU Mutual Insurance-Tel 01756-793516 who did me Fully comp for £480 and I pay by installments ( but I am 40ish )

Kev

ME AGAIN,

I FORGOT TO MENTION I TRIED AXA JUST BEFORE

XMAS , AND THEY TOLD ME THEY DO NOT INSURE IMPORTS ANYMORE.

KEV

lol - now there's irony if I ever heard it.

For my ZX300TT 2-seater import I tried Axa first. The reason was that had full no claims on my wife's Fiesta, and could tranbsfer this. "Sorry we don't do Imports" was the reply I got too.

After getting various quotes from companies, (picked up from various Importers' sites), I went to A-Plan. They have various offices around but it is best to phone their head office in Thatcham. I explained my history etc.., and the Underwriter was rang - I did not have to transfer my no claims as they gave me a 70% introduction discount (apparently honoured until I have built up the no claims - finger's crossed), and this was cheaper than anywhere else I tried.

The other thing is "it is with a very good company - Axa". Apparently A-Plan has a scheme for imports underwritten by Axa, and Axa only do this with A-Plan - I was told.

You might want to try A-Plan on 0845-071-1234 - it worked for me. Geoff

I'm with A-Plan too. They were cheapest for my import and I have had 15 points on my licence and a 30 day ban in the last 5 years...

Not many insurers like me! ;-)

Ooopps, just checked my documents and although I'm with AXA it's through A-plan.

Sorry for causing any confusion!

Cheers,

Andy
