Don't know where to begin. Driving along @ 30mph and all of a sudden the car starts smelling of petrol and hesitates and cuts out. After a few tries at restarting it fires up pretty rough with even more stronger smell of petrol. Also the amber engine light on the dash cluster is constantly on now. The rev counter needle is idling between 1.5-2000 revs. The car feels extremely rough. The fan now is constantly on as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks....

what light mate? Sounds like the cat light which would more than likely be your PTU. Try cleaning the connectors ;)

Yup, checked underneath the throttle cover as well. The car is running and idling high. I can hear the fan on always. The smell of petrol is unbearable. Any idea why the engine check light would be on ?

I have just done this a bit earlier from the previous advice given. Nothing is showing up in the diagnostics. Followed instructions meticulously.

Totally lost.

Thats right. Thats why I am confused because the cars engine check light is still on (limp mode) but the diagnostic saying no malfunction.

that is strange. I was thinking about it and it makes sense for the temp sensor to be at fault :( Just one thing to try, reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for at least 1/2 hour or so.

I have reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for 30 mins. The car when started was running rough but with engine check light off. Then within a few minutes it went back to dodgy mode with smell of petrol, revs high, engine check light on, fan on !

What a disaster !
