This is a long post - be warned!

Since my engine rebuild, I must have had a boost leak and not having a TT before, I couldn't tell.

I posted up about oil on one of my hard pipes, and was advised that if oil can get out -air can get in and to tighten up the clips.

Well I did that and all of a sudden my boost guage has sprung into action and it picks up much better....

I took her out for the first time since fixing the leak, got out onto the M40 and put my foot down as it was empty. Usually I would have got to a cruising speed of between 90 -95 in the time I had my foot down, but to my suprise the car was off the clock (only goes to 110) and the rev counter was at 6.5k!!

I won't do it again - and it was an accident - but I am curious - HOW FAST WAS I GOING?

I am not one for big speed, I was just shocked at how fast it was!

On a TT, every 1000rpm is roughly 25mph, so a quick calculation suggests 162.5mph or thereabouts.

a manual does approx. 167mph in 5th at 6.5k

an automatic does approx. 180 mph in 4th at 6.5k

this is with the stock 16" wheels.

With calculation, you can found that in 5th gear at 6500rpm you are at 175MPH or 280km/h

My max was 270km/h or 169MPH, the road was not enought long...

Unless your car has an aftermarket ECU you will be rev limited to 165MPH!!! Basic rule of thum is see what speed your car is doing at 3100 RPM in 5th gear then double the speed reading you get in MPH and that will give you your Z'eds top speed. This can be affected by fitting things like bigger diameter wheels so by sticking bigger wheels on you will increase your top end!

would a zed even get to 6.5k in 5th gear

Well even a standard TT would no problem providing it's running correctly... Did this on mine when I first got before any boost and engine upgrades on standard 16" rubber so that's how I know they will... With my mods now tend to use the much safer option of a rolling road as it now tops out at 189Mph at 7521 Rpm!!! Would need 20" wheels to break the magic 200MPH barrier or alter me final drive gear ratio!

I am running a genuine Mines ECU and have a few other mods ;)

Just gone back to 16's again so the gearing and top speed will be standard (but unrestricted)..

This has made interesting reading your comments... I really hope to god I wasn't doing 167mph as a sensible law abiding upstanding member of the comunity.

Can I verify this by trying again on a rolling road, or do they only allow you power runs in 2nd/3rd gear?

Most power runs are done using 4th Gear because that gear is a 1:1 ratio to give you your true BHP and power at the wheels etc... You can do it in 5th gear though and get a full dyno plot so you know what the cars doing at any given RPM... If it's a good modern rolling road you'll get a read out of the max RPM, BHP, Boost, intake temps etc.. Your Z will hit the rev limiter at some point but it depends on how the Mines ECU is mapped and what for.. Most aftermarket chips will give and extra 200RPM over standard so you should be hitting it around the 7400 Rpm mark..
