Just awaiting the knock at the door as I also addressed it as Dear Cretins of the Gwent Police Force and demanded they release figures on how many other retired dogs they distroyed.

if they take you down they take me down, united we stand!!

heres my opinion!

Dear Sir/Madam

I am totally totally disgusted that a long serving police dog of the community is going to be destroyed just because some selfish hardhearted unloving dimwit thinks it is the right thing to do. How can you even justify this decision. Oh let me guess! They probably think the dog may pose a risk to someone, so let get it put down, it’s done its job and we can all protect our own asses. Anyway, it’s only a dog! Given a choice between the dog and the dimwit who has made the decision, I would definitely choose the dog to live out its life in comfort! Get a life and consider how many other people this is affecting you poor excuse for a human being!

Yours Sincerely

Paul Rowley

What you have to remember is that nothing reported on by the press is ever 100% accurate.

The majority of police dogs are kept by the handler when the dog is retired.

A dog 5 years old is way below the normal retirement age so there must be issues with the dog, I would assume it is too dangerous now and uncontrollable.

All police dogs are "dangerous dogs" per se, hence handlers requiring licences.

Putting the dog down will be the last option.

People are always too eager to believe bad press when police are involved. Not unlike some people commenting on the JAE incident when they weren't even there, chinese whispers springs to mind!

I can undertand your point however the web page is by the family

It does seem very harsh but this may be why, quote from BBC article "The dog concerned made an unprovoked attack on a kennel handler and after careful consideration it was decided that the dog should be humanely put down."

If any dog made an unprovoked attack on any person it would more than likely be given a destruction order by the court.

Unfortunately for the handler's family they have emotional involvement which makes their opinion biased.

What would you all say if the appeal is successful and the dog savages a child whilst out for a walk, or even kills a child? How guilty would you all feel then knowing your support saved Saxon and gave him that opportunity, think on...

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, have two myself, but Gwent's decision would not have been made lightly and would be their last option.

From the website that was when the dog was much younger and in it's early training. This dog has been deemed safe to be on our streets for 5years after completeing it's training. It has lived as part of a family. If I'd put down any of the dogs that bit me as young untrained dog then I'd never would have kept any of my dogs.

Most dog owner's will admite to having being biten by young untrained dog, before the dog is socialized and trained ready to meet the world into which it must learn to live in.

Dogs that never learn not to bite and continue to bite at the slightest provocation are dangerous. Who are unpredictable, untrained and socialized.

i would be asking why ?

you have a police dog who seems to have had a good 5 year career - put in kennels and it makes an unprovoked attack.

In my experience there is a very good doggy reason for everything they do - we just have to understand it.

alex

I sent a not so nice email and suggested that we release this to the national press if possible.....I am sure there are millions of people out there that are completely unaware of this.....

Personally I know that 99.9% of you have no idea about the training and use of police dogs and as a result don't really know what you are talking about. IMHO.

Well, please enlighten us oh wise one!!!

I know people who have taken retired police dogs and have wonderful trained family pets.

But I'm also aware that some poor dogs are so messed up after retiring they are complete AAARRRR, and may never recover.

Yampiedog,

Well I have a real love for GSD's and am lucky enough to have had 2. You are absolutely right and have no idea what is involved with training a Police dog but I refuse to believe that an animal who has served well should be put down. You're totally entitled to your opinion but I'd love to know what reasons there are to put this dog down?

Vijay

you know something i do not really care, this annoys me hun, if we are not prepared to look after these poor creatures after we have used them to our own advantages then we should not use them as working creatures in the first place,. These animals work hard and only because we make them do it, they do not do it through choice. shall we stop using animals? surely if there is a chance that such work would make them viscious then we should stop it straight away?? maybe, but no we do not because we gain something out of them so we insist on carrying on. hmmmmmm

sorry guys but when it comes to animals i am very opinionated everything above is just my opinion but im sorry we forced these creatures into being working animals. so there is no excuse

feel free to argue!

thats a very harsh post dog - most people are just being sympathetic.

and no i know nothing about police dogs - i DO however have a lot of experience in traiing dogs and there are very very few indeed which cant be worked with. Thats not to say i havent worked with dogs with a bit of a temper in which case they wear a muzzle in public - although uncomfortable its still better than being destroyed

One of the guys on the rotary forum is from South Africa. Its standard practice out there that the handler gets first refusal on keeping the dog.

Maybe we don't know the full facts but its not the point IMO. Both me and the missus have dealt with dogs since we were very small, including many German Shephard problem dogs that were on 'last chance' due to biting previous rescuers. There's very very few out there that can't be recovered with a lot of patience, love and understanding. We trained the dog to be the way it is now, the handler should be given the chance to re-introduce it into normal society.
