I've just read a bit of the MOT guidlines here which is as follows:

 

[Re: front "position lights", I assume means side-lights]

Note: At least 50% of each lamp must be visible from the front or rear as appropriate

 

Does that mean:

a) when viewed from the front, it must be less than half obscured

OR

b) the light-emitting area of the lamp as viewed from the front must be at least half of total light-emitting area (i.e. the face can't be angled more than 60deg from the lateral axis).

 

:confused:

 

I've just converted my side lights to be in the US side-marker position, which means that there's greater light-emitting area from the side, but the light is still actually directed straight forwards. I suspect it may consitute an MOT failure...

can you see them stood at the front of the car ? (about ten foot away infront of number plate)
